Joined: August 2007 Posts: 71 Location: Southern California | Ok, I'm looking for a new guitar. Here are some I like that I'm considering, any thoughts. Let me cover the immediate responses I know I'm gonna get: 1. just because these links are from GC doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to buy from them. 2. of course I am going to go to a shop & play them first & see how they sound & feel before I buy 3. I am not going to buy a used because my last one was used & I got ripped off, it has a bad neck & I can't even tell, so if you know how to tell a good guitar from a bad guitar buying used is a good option, but it's not an option for me. I like this one in 'natural' finish: http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_ovation_celebrity_cc44... I like this one in either 'honey burst' or 'natural': http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/Ovation-Celebrity-SE-Delux... I like this one in sunburst: http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/Ovation-Celebrity-DX-CDX24... I like this one in natural koa, but it doesn't even mention what the top is made of?? http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_ovation_celebrity_acou... I LOVE this one, but it's WAY out of my price range (and it only comes in the super shallow body) http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_ovation_viper?full_sku... And later on I do want to also get a nylon string & learn some classical/flamenco type playing as well, I saw this one which I liked a lot, it's very affordable (in my opinion) & is a Fender & I like the pretty design around the soundhole (enlarge the photo to see this): http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/Fender-CDN210S-Classical-G...

The reason I ask, why buy a new Celebrity when you could have a nice late 80's 1767 Legend like the one on ebay right now? This is a very nice USA Legend, and with one day left the bidding is low..the auction is being discussed in the 'FOR SALE' postings...

(I'm not picking on Celebs - I've got 2, myself - but most don't compare to a US O). I just picked up a 1980's vintage Legend for the same price as the plywood topped CC44 you linked, and it's one of the sweetest guitars I've ever played. GC also sells used gear, so check out any there, too. If you're set on a Celeb, get a solid-top (usually has the letter 'S' in the model name) like the CSE44. I'm guessing the Koa-topped Celebs are also plywood - the Koa is a veneer over a spruce laminate top. And don't consider the Viper unless you don't want to disturb roommates/neighbors. It's not really meant to be played without amplification.

It is very rare to hear of a transaction between members that goes sour. Word gets out very fast. Although there is a lot of good-natured banter slung about, most experienced members here value the continuing relationship so they're not about to take advantage of somebody else. Stick around a while and you'll see.

Here\'s a 1717 Legend that just showed up on the bay with a $440 buy-it-now price. OFC member Amazingly-Detached lives nearby, you might be able to talk him into checking it out for you. For the price of the CC44 at GC you'd have a really fine US-made O.

(I will never do that again, either--a lesson learned the hard way.) So--don't rush into a Celebrity, because now you'll have the whole board keeping its' collective eyes open for you. If there is a good one out there, someone is bound to find it, and someone else may be close enough to test it for you. (And with the way GAS strikes around here, you may get a very reasonable deal on something you may not have even considered just because one of us is jonesin' for something else.) --Karen

You can buy a used Legend or USA elite for the same or even less money than a new Celebrity (and because it's new doesn't mean it doesn't need a setup). The one Celeb I had (an upper end model) hurt my wrist to play it, the neck shape was so bad. Not to mention, it really sounded flat and dull compared to the ring of a solid top USA O. I've bought and sold USA Ovations for less than 300 bucks that played and sounded better than any Celebrity out there. Don't let one bad deal on a used (foreign built) guitar keep you from buying used. Solid wood tops tend to 'open up' after several years of playing, and sound better than new guitars. With a new Adamas in the house, I'm sitting on the fence about selling my Custom Legend. The market for these (unfortunately) is right around the price range - or even less than the new Celebrities or Ultras. :(

Center hole or multi hole style, great electronics, contour bowl, the works. Contact Al. Last I saw, he was selling them brand new with warranty at a really good price and you get to deal personally with a human being. This is a better guitar than any Celebrity ever made new, used, or in between. Dave

Might be out of your price range but maybe you could use their credit. These are an excellent guitar.

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 5563 Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Hi there, I have not posted to you yet...but I think I do know what you are trying to do...get a good guitar without getting hosed because you just don't know much about the instruments...hey that’s cool...but understand this if you can...most of the members that post have been playing for many years: I've been playing for over 40 yrs. So if a recommendation is made, its simply trying to help you out and to help you avoid the pitfalls...I understand about wanting a new instrument...but I have also read that you cannot afford one...sure you might be able to set up payments, but if you take advantage of letting these knowledgeable folks (like myself) look at the guitars for sale; and make a recommendation, its probably a really good one. I know that you need a really nice instrument (preferably a USA made Ovation) in really great shape, for not a lot of money! Here is a possibility: Beautiful Sunburst Legend This guitar is in excellent condition, and is a great looking sunburst (a rare one at that), and had great electronics’ (OP-24)...Case Etc. No, It's not new, but it is very close to being that without the "new Price"...at the time of this post, its less than $250.00...That is a great deal...I hope you'll look at it...matbe its something you could really like! I would personally not hesitate to bid on this guitar for a minute if I were looking for a wonderful guitar at a great price (as you can see below, I have several of my own. That is what makes this forum so great: we really try to help others out. In fairness to your earlier post; later tonight I’ll look over the guitars you've selected and give my opinions. Hope this helps! Music Mike

The first two were 26 and 36 years ago. The last four purchases were made in the past year, all from Al. He knows Ovations. Presumably, so do other independent Ovation dealers. Tell him what you want, what you are willing to pay, and trust his advice. The rest of us on this board, with a few exceptions, are amateurs.
