Location: Texas | I am sure, back in the dusty archives, this has been discussed but I am lazy so I will ask.
My vintage ovations do not seem to like my amp for electrics. I have a Vox AD50VT.
Since I am poor as a church mouse now - what would be a good acoustic amp that won't cost an arm and a leg - I need both to run from my credit cards and toss the bills in the garbage :D |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Vision, talk to Al. I have one of his Genz Jrs, among others, and at Al's cost, the Jr is a bargain. The AAD amp being discussed on another thread is an excellent amp, but it is a more purpose specific, hand-made amp that costs double what you can pick up the Jr for, and you'll need outboard effects if those are important to you. Based on your post, you sound like minimizing cost is an important consideration. Go for the Jr. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | That 50 watt Vox Valvetronix amp has great versatility. There's got to be a setting that sounds decent with an acoustic guitar. It won't be as good as the Genz Benz, but it won't cost you anything to spend some time tweaking it to get a nice clean sound. |

Location: Texas | It might help if I read the instructions on the Vox :)It doesn't matter with my electrics - they all sound good on the Vox. My new Adamas play great - but the 1985 and the 1982 get a tremedous amount of feedback - I had tweaked the gain, master volume - I need to read up on it and find out how to stop all the effects so it will just play normally.

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | Personally, for acoustics, I like to use a powered PA (yamaha and peavey make good ones) and a powered mixer (like an alesis with effects). This might be a cheaper way for you to go.
The big question is: How many beans do you want to spend? The second question is:Where will you be using it?
Once we know that, I know there'll be lots of recommendations. |

There's some basic things you can start with. First set the amp selector to "boutique clean." Next, use the acoustic simulation effect. After that play with the other controls and don't be afraid to try each control at minimum and maximum.
I think you have an acute case of Gear Acquisition Syndrome, which is merely another form of the GAS that many here suffer from chronically. The cure is quite simple: learn to use what you got! |

Yes, she is! Sure, she has built a fantastic collection in a short ammount of time...and there is a reason for that; but it is hers and hers alone and even though I know, I won't break confidentiality! She is just learning about A/E's...I am quite sure most of us went through that phase at one time and she is fairly new to the club as well...Be nice and be gentle group...Suffice it to say, any help anyone can give her is a really nice thing to do...Trust me on that!

Vision, I have a Genz-Benz Jr., too. I really like it; all my O's sound really great, (2 acoustics, 2 electrics), and it doesn't weigh a ton to tote. It will carry over a roomful of women singing their hearts out, and I don't think I've ever really pushed it. Just my two cents...

Mitchrx - I tried what you said - I turned it to boutique clean - sounds much better but had to turn that gain down for the 82 collector - wow - the feedback hum blew the shingles off the house. Now I need to find the manual to find the acoustic effect - I don't see one but I will have time tomorrow to actually read the manual. I might be a woman but I did inhert one genetic trait from my father - when all else fails - read the instructions.
I have been in the garage for the last 3 hours watching a very nice guy put a very expensive fuel pump in my 1954 MG. It is me or should this car be working perfectly after being in the hands of an MG expert in Florida since Feb? Fuel pump goes out - two days after she was brought home - distributor is too loose - had to drain the gas, put it back in and then I drove around the block 4 times with this very nice guy following me - 3 times almost didn't make it home but on the fourth time, after he messed with the distributor some more, she seems fine. I was kind of hoping the freaking thing would catch on fire so I could collect the insurance. :rolleyes:

My take (and I love british cars, especially old MG's) ... the British are by nature "putterers". Therefore, British cars require constant puttering. The secret to having a British car is to go out to the garage every Saturday morning, raise the bonnet, and do the puttering things ... tightening down all the screws, checking all the hoses, making sure the wiring is still connected, check the timing, etc. Then take the sweet thing out for a little Saturday drive. Those who putter every week have a car that is trouble free. However, if you take the typical American approach to car maintenance, keep two MG's on hand ... one to drive whilst the other is being fixed. ;)

Vision, Last night I was gonna mention that I have a Crate GFX-15 with all kinds of neat lazy-people effects, and that they have Larger versions with better effects. But then I looked-up the Vox, and discovered that it has a dozen amps, and assorted effects... So I felt emasculated and said nuthin' :rolleyes:
You'd think that with all them effects, you could find something nice.
As to reading the manual... I got me a Brand-New Zoom G1X effects gadget, it sez it will do everything except make Popcorn. Even with the little book they gave me, I can't figure this damn thing out! So I just use my damn amp.
There is only some much flange, phase-shifter, and other crap that I can really use anyway.
I just wanna play guitar. I don't wanna have to program something to do it!
But that's another story :D |

I open that bonnet every morning and say, "yep, that is an engine. I did watch everything he did and learn a lot today. I actual was able to recalibrate the water temp gauge - taking a bow :D I really, really need to take a course - this is a simple 1250cc engine, I should be able to learn this and not have to pay out the butt. I can now gap a spark plug - had no idea there was a specific gap needed. I can use a laser thermo to check the engine temp - since the water gauge was reading over the limit. I now know how to change the oil and lay in gasoline while watching this very nice guy change the fuel pump.
In my defense - I had a company car for 25 years - all I had to do was put gas in the car and call the tow truck when it broke down. Those were the days.
Classic cars are like the commericals you see of people on a sail boat - they are lounging around, drinking wine and looking so happy - that is BS - I have sailed and you have to work - so thoughts of jumping into a classic car and driving happily into the sunset with no cares or worries is just a dream. LOL |

By the time I get to English, I am distracted and on to another project. LOL It has finally happened, I am becoming more and more like my mother - God help me - she just wants an on and off switch on everything - that is looking like a pretty good thought process at the moment :D ;) |

Location: SoCal | The interesting thing about old sports cars is that they sometimes serve purposes beyond just driving pleasure.
I've got an 83 Rx-7 (my second 83 -- I've managed to spend about 18 years with 83 Rx-7's). Fun to drive but when my daughter was younger and we had trouble communicating, we'd go for drives and that's when we talked to each other. How can you put a price on something like that?
I'm putting that car on the market in the next week or so. We don't have room for it and it's time for somebody else to enjoy the karma.... |
