:D What I would give just to play like him for one day - of course then I would get PO'd the next day when I had to go back to the five songs I do know LOL

. . .me.

It's taken me over 40 years to get here, and I'm happy with the result. I can play everything I want, nothing I don't and wouldn't trade skill sets with anybody.

Absolutely! The goal should be to have your own voice. That voice may be influenced by one, or many players, and you can borrow and assimilate licks, tricks and techniques, but as soon as you try to "copy" or sound like another player you lose any identity you may have had. Imagine if you were an aspiring novelist and your goal was simply to write a book someone else had already written.....

A friend of mine has devoted himself to playing like Mark Knopfler. He's damn good at it, but as I've pointed out to him on many occasions the world already has one perfectly good Mark Knopfler. He's so locked into this that he actullay has nothing of his own, and ask him to play guitar over something that isn't a Dire Straits chord progression and he clams up.

Being original is much harder than imitating, but infinitely more satisfying. I would kill for the chops and knowledge of some of my favorite players, but I don't want to play like them exactly. I would just like to be more creative, inspired, and prolific...

Really?? Actually I think you may be confusing "what" you're playing with "how" you're playing it which is what the thread is about.

As others have said, I am happy with my style of playing, but unfortunately, I don't play enough and I can't do everything I wish I could.

Are you really serious that you can play like -insert artists name- easily, but you can't just pick up the guitar and strum a few chords or do a lead riff without sounding like -insert artists name- ????

On the other hand, as far as actual music goes, there was a time when covering other people was much easier. I never (or rarely) sounding or played like the other people, but it's much easier to play a song that's already written than to come up with my own, but it still sounds like me playing it.... and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Pete has some good instructional videos. He spends a lot of time figuring out how to play like other people. Copying other people obviously worked for him.

Wonder how good you have to be to even be able to use his videos - I have seen them but they might be for an advanced player.

I would have no problem sounding exactly like him - don't care if I have my own style - who is going to hear it but me :D ;)

His Jim Croce one that I have is very easy. He does a great discription and it was easy for me to follow, plus is tabs are decent. He even shows a couple ways to play it a little easier, if you want.

So many great players. I really like Pete's style too Leslie. It's the style of guitar playing that i work to get better on myself.

If you haven't heard him check out Michael Chapdelaine I think you might like his style too.

"Vision"

You can spend 4 days learning from Pete at Fur Peach Ranch here in Ohio. I took a class there in April with Adrian Legg. Pete came into our class for a few minutes before it began and complimented me on my Adamas 2080 and played it for a few minutes. I spent some time talkin with him over the weekend....this is the bad part....I didn't know who he was.

thanks Greg - I wouldn't mind one bit playing like either one of them :)

Scartozi - great story - since you didn't know who he was, I am sure you had some relaxed conversations with him lol

Yahh...he`s good, and as odd as it may sound, I agree with Mr.Ovation AND Roger, playing your own stuff is Better, when a mistake is done, who would know, on the other hand, "copying" someone else`s riffs will still sound like "you".. :)

Vic

..does that make sense..

At this point in my life, the only person I want to sound like is me, too. I don't have the time to copy others.

Yeah, what you said. I agree 100%. When I was young, of course I absorbed and copied various guitarists who I found inspiring. But I differ from many players in that I do not tote around a repertoire of 100 popular songs... sometimes I wish I did... but instead I focus pretty much only on my own music.

I hope I didn't sound snooty. Didn't mean to be. It's just that I know I'm not going to be segovia, nor have I any urge to be, so within my limitations, I make the most fun music (for me) that I can. That's all.

Approximately a lifetime is all it ever takes.
