We have mentioned several times, the topic of album art. Thought I would start a thread. This one includes Ovation, but post your favorite album art work. Beal - is there a backstory to this, or did it just happen?

One of the cool things about this cover was that it had fold-out stands that allowed it to actually be used as a small writing desk. But wait, there's more. A very, very few of them came with a pair of panties wrapped around the album inside. There was a quick recall on those, however, since some girls were wearing the panties, and they were meant to only be a novelty display. Not made from fabric, but rather from a paper-weave-type material that was.. get this.. not fireproof, thus not rated as safe clothing item. There were also girls reporting allergy breakout rash in that little delicate area. Anyway, my copy had the panties.. light blue.. which, from what I understand now fetch a very good collector's price. Mine, at age 17, ended up as a flag on my car's radio antenna.

So, on this week in June, I dedicate this post to you, Elginacres, as an educator of such crazy teens. A braver man than I. Hope you have a great summer!

The USA copies of this album had 3D artwork that used a lenticular style of printing, so when you shifted the angle of view the image appeared to move. Or maybe it was just something that someone slipped into my drink. I dunno. Cool cover, though. It was recorded and dedicated in memory of Duane Allman.

Nancy, I never noticed those were Ovation spaceships until someone posted it on this site. Probably Miles. It just shows how they were everywhere back in the day.

Nice One Nancy....I always loved this one too...and yes - in that era both Brian May and Freddie played Ovation 12s in concert...not sure what was used on '39 in the studio.

Here's one that fascinates me. If you knew Chapin, you will see that the blurred facial image looks nothing at all like him. Nada. However, I did happen to notice that if you look at the very bottom right corner on the edge of his blurred hair, there is a tiny hidden profile image in the mix of the hair that DOES look like Harry. Just like him, actually. I've always wondered if its use was intentional on the part of the label's graphics people who caught it, or possibly altered it, or maybe they didn't even notice it. I've never heard or read anything about it. Just my own observations.

Yes the album art really was an integral part of the music. Too sad for the kids nowadays who only know the generic music from "streaming" apps. I sitll (vaguely) remember one day in the 70s when a group of buddies  drove to the big city to go to the big record store, and we all had consumed a certain hallucinogenic substances ... I ended up buying three albums just based on art without even doing the pre-listening. This was one of them:

Yup, the album cover was part of the intrigue of the music. I remember walking through the PX in USARJ. Some friends had previously turned me on to Blow by Blow and Wired. When I saw this on display, I just had to have it. There were no sound sampling stations at the time; so alot of my experimental purchases were based on the cover design. Some were good risks, some bad...I distinctly recall this and Pat Travers' Radio Active as having had excellent ROI...

The best... it´s a really difficult question. I thought a lot about it and for me the best is the one which impressed me the most: my first LP, bought from my small budget. And still one of the best ever.
