But give credit where credit is due, the instrument I just purchased is pretty darn nice for the money. I've got a pretty high end Collings mandolin which is the cat's meow, but I wanted something with a pickup that you wouldn't mind throwing in the trunk of the car or bang around with a bunch of your drunk buddies at a jam session. So I picked up one of the new AX model mandos and I've got to say I'm pretty darn impressed. Nobody would mistake it sonically or visually with the Collings, but the darn thing is literally 1/10 TH the price. Compared to previous applause and celebrity mandos I have owned, this new AX is a significant step up in terms of fit finish and quality. Very nicely done. I have not taken my own photos yet so below is just one from the Ovation site. Don't poo poo this model just because it's called AX. It's a hell of a deal if you ask me.

Has anyone else gotten a new import model that they have any insight on too? This is really nice to hear, Thank You StandingOvation!

There was a scathing review of the AX model on another mandolin site a few years ago, mainly due to poor set-up issues so hopefully that has been remedied. My understanding is that there will not be any Ovation mandolins built in the USA for at least this year. You can't beat them plugged in, and they stay in tune very well, which you really appreciate when you have to deal with 8 strings.
