I'm sure glad that you didn't post photos - I don't think my heart would take the strain.

Tony:
Your list makes me ask "what do you have left and what do you still have for sale or trade"? Hopefully those lists are much shorter.

I've never traded a guitar but have sold 8....all Ovations or Adamii. To be exact, that would be 17% of the number you've sold or traded. You've been busy.

StellarJim,

about 61 Adamas, Ovation, Martin, Takamine, and a few others like my Wurlitzer (6 and 12 strings, peghead and slothead). Most of them are A's and O's. Will eventually get down to 20-30.

No hurry as it is so much more fun to find/buy, hard to let go. Each of the Adamas and Ovation models are distinctly different and it is a joy to have experienced them over the years.

My condolences, yet respect for those that have avoided GAS.

Usually, someone contacts me to see if I have what they are looking for. Wonderful hobby which takes up a lot less room than that many cars...

This is what GAS looks like. That I actually keep a list is another symptom.
asterisk(*) means SOLD or traded or something. "[]" has date sold or whatever.
No asterisk means that I still have it.
Step 1 is to admit that you are powerless over this disease.

and Beal and ProfessorBB?

(actually that is wrong... some people KEEP a bunch of guitars, not sell/trade)

Buying and selling or trading guitars is one of the basic parts of my guitarist´s life, I`m a self-confessed hunter and gatherer. I did not journalize all but here´s a list of those I can remember, but only the Ovations, a complete list would be a three-digit one:
1115 Pacemaker
1615 Pacemaker
1618 Glen Campbell 12
1621 Artist
1613 Classic
1624 Country Artist
1657 Anniversary
1718 Elite
1769 Custom Legend
N 769 Custom Legend
1619 Custom Legend*
1719-30 Custom Legend
1659 Custom Legend 12
1687 Adamas
1681 Adamas WT
1638 Elite 12
1866 Legend 12

(* my first Ovation, 1979 model, a battered barn-find with lots of finish cracks and even a rusty trussrod, but I must say one of the best sounding and playable guitars I ever had.)

I still have different guitars, but will always have a number of Ovations. Finally I can say that my highest valued Ovation is the 1687 Adamas, the only Ovation I bought again after having sold one. Mine was made in 1982, and it looks and plays like a brand-new guitar, incredible.

The fifth.. 1613 classic was the only loss I did not regret: I gave this guitar to a very poor guy who could play (seriously) better than I, and whose guitar got irreparably damaged...maybe the best "deal" I ever did.

I'm more impressed by the fact you not only have kept an accurate list but that you typed them all out.

I have pics of some of my former guitars that I do not remember owning.  How sad is that?

Even going back to the 70s, I haven't sold as many as some of you guys do in a year.
Univox H-2?
Homemade fingerbuster
Then jump 30 years:
Ovation Celebrity Deluxe
Applause 12 string
Ovation 99 Collector
Ovation Patriot
Ovation Custom Balladeer
Ovation Country Artist
Hamer Duotone
I gave an 83 Collector and an 87 Collector to my daughters, but I won't count guitars I've given away.
I still have about twice as many as I've sold. I actually sold the Hamer because I wasn't playing it. Seems like a strange reason to sell a guitar now.

I don't have any lists, and I know are many I can't seem to find, but I do have some pics of ones I no longer have...

You could get several years out of that, Patch.

I have a frugal buy & hold personality and still "own" all guitars I have ever bought even though most are living with other people (I hope) and may not be accessible any more. So for you frequent traders - how does it work out from a financial point of view? Do you try to break even or get a profit from a trade, or do you have a pre-set loss level (e.g. 20 or 30%) that you can tolerate, or do you just not really care about what you initially invested into a guitar as long as it generates enough revenue to buy the next?

I don't consider myself a frequent trader, so there's no method to the madness. I sold my first two guitars at about a 100% profit to fund the purchase of my Matrix ($245) in 1977. The Celebrity Deluxe I traded for the 99 Collector and then sold it to someone who really wanted it for more than I paid for it. The Applause 12 I sold for a little less than I paid for it to partially fund a Balladeer 12. The Patriot, Balladeer and CA I sold for slightly less than I paid in order to raise funds for Haiti earthquake relief after my daughter was there. The Duotone for a little more than I paid, just because it was wasted on me. Over all, I'd say I broke even, but that wasn't what I was trying to do.

When I was getting back into guitar, I bought and sold dozens of Celebrity guitars and a few Taylors mostly to try out different models. But along they way I noticed I was making a net gain. The result of which funded the purchases of my 1537 and 2771 LX, as well as a couple of electrics. I play mostly electric these days and am quite satisfied with the guitars I've acquired and do very little trading these days. But I still get afflicted with sporadic GAS attacks.

So for you frequent traders - how does it work out from a financial point of view? Do you try to break even or...

When I first started buying and selling in 2007 or so, it was a different world.
You could buy an Ovation on eBay for $300, play it for six months... then Sell it for $400.
I bought different guitars to try them out back then.
You could buy a guitar, play it for a while...
and at least get your money back to try something else.

A while ago I did the arithmetic on whether I had made a profit on my guitar buying/selling.
I discovered that I had Lost thousands of dollars.
But I was not trying to make a profit back then.
Nowadays, if I sell a guitar I would like to get close to my money back.
That doesn't seem to be happening on eBay these days.

There's a database on my website of every Ovation I have owned. Click on REFERENCE (left side menu bar) and then choose Database. Once there you can click CURRENT at the top right and the list will collapse to only those that I still own.

There's some I regret selling and some I regret ever buying.
