Location: Eaton Rapids Michigan | I'm sure that you guys who frequent this board more than I have had this question but I did a search and turned up nada...my question; I have a set of Martin 'Marquis' lights and want to know if these are good strings for the Ovation I bought for my son...if not what strings work best? I still have time to whip up to the guitar store and grab some!

Location: south east Michigan | I used Martin Marquis exclusivly for a long, long time. I like them and still use them sometimes. For the most part now I've jumped on the Elixir bandwagon. |

I have also been using the D'Addario EXP's which are coated like the Elixirs and a little cheaper. I believe thats what the factory is using now too as it's what came on my FD when I got it back. |

You don't change strings.
You just trade for guitars with new ones already on them. :D
Plus you mentioned using coated strings so Tupperware isn't going to want any of your guitars. Well maybe the CEO. :D |

Location: SoCal | For whatever reason, EXP's don't last with me. At the last tour, when I got my OFC slothead, I think it had a set on it, and with everybody playing it, the strings were dead by the end of the evening. Of course, it might have had Adamas lights on it. But my experience with EXP's is that they don't last for me.
I've been using Elixir phospher bronze lights or light/mediums on almost everything these days. They last forever and have a great tone. I think even Clifford, who hates coated strings, might like them..... |

Location: Eaton Rapids Michigan | Thanks guys, I will get to work right now getting those puppies on. It is also good information that mediums work. I personally like a heavier string and I think once he gets his "playing callouses" he may want to go for the heavier strings...this may be a moot point though with Ovations. I also have to reiterate how beautiful this guitar sounds! Cheers!

Location: Utah | We tested a whole range of different strings on the daughter's 1778T and found the light gauge Martin Marquis Phosphor Bronze to be the best. I thought that the EXPs sounded a bit dead.
On my new used 6778LX the Marquis sound great, but different. It will be fun to run through all the different string choices to find the ones that I like best. We'll try the EXP, EJ, and the nanoweb. |

Location: Parrish, FL | Ditto on the 1818's on all my guitars. There are probably better strings, particularly for the UTE, but I'm happy now. It's also one less complication in my life not having to keep track of which string go on which guitar. :rolleyes:

Location: Tychy, Poland | i had few sets if EXP's and i have to say that they're weird. Three sets of the same model - one lasted 1,5 month, another one lasted 4 days and D string went out of tune, and third seth sounded like crap from the beginning.
Now i use Marris strings (which are basiccally US Martins packed in Czech Republic) for 5$/set and i change them every other week. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Absolutely agree on the free and cheap. Seems like everytime I buy another guitar I receive a few free sets of strings. When I do need strings, I look for whatever is a bargain on the Internet and buy a dozen, always lights. A few weeks ago I purchased a wire mesh basket at the Container Store that is just perfect for storing string packages. I think I have about two dozen on hand, mostly 1818s, but also 1717s, EXL110's, and some others. The BeBops are great for jazz. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Yes, I put them on a blue and grey snkaeskin Thunderbolt. They look good there. Can't tell how they sound cause it pointed out the fact that the guitar needs some serious set up work and I didn't feel like doing it so it's back in the case. I put a set of the reds on the Caddy. |
