I thought he sounded very good, and I loved the guitar work from him and his band. It's nice to see a band that can play as well as they did. Real musical instruments being played live. On the down side, the beard made him look like an old man, and the mostly younger audience probably thought he was some relic from Woodstock. At least that's what I heard on the local sports talk radio today.

There was nothing he did that would change any opinions but, let's face it, that's not what the NFL was looking for. Their shows, since the Justin/what's her name debacle, have been nothing short of safe and boring. Paul Mac, the Stones and Petty are truly classic acts but don't deserve to be there. They've turned that "halftime show" into a zoo, IMHO. I heard the Eagles turned it down before Petty accepted. Anyone know if that's true?

Second thought: Envy. If there are some finals over here (soccer), the best we get to see - if so - is some crappy band from an aftermarket 'American Idol' casting show. Wow! I never realized the big names doing the halftime show. Okay, for sure I heard about this Timberlake guy and Toyota Jackson (or her sister), but that was nothing to realize truthfully. Just one word: Great! I wish we had some artists like Petty (even with his fuzzy beard) that could or would gig on such events. Kurt

Nice selection of axe's...For me, it was much better than some of the junk from the past...and for those who just gotta rag on it: Remember: it coulda been hip-hop! As for his looking "Old", most of us just have to look in the mirror: me included!

Don't get me wrong, I think Petty and crew did a fine job, but talk about wrong music for the wrong crowd. I'm sure they enjoyed it, but it's the freak'n SuperBowl... It should be upbeat, rock'n the house!!! Springsteen, Hank Jr, something with a "wow" factor. Even Prince knew what he needed to do for the crowd and did it. Even Janet and Justine... well we're still talking about it.. Like I said... I like Petty... sittin in the backyard with a cigar or pipe, just relaxing and soaking in the scenery it's perfect... but for the SuperBowl??

I only watched the game cause several friends(Wed night regulars) came over to eat all the left over food from the Grayson visit. We went downstairs and played our own halftime after Petty and came back up with minutes left in the fourth quarter. Our halftime show was better, at least we thought so.

Obviously they were either really vip-tickets, or they were part of the promotion. That said, does that place have real grass? Enjoyed it - he played what I expected him to, nice eye candy on the axe front, shame about the beard. At least it stops the confusion between him and Iggy Pop. Please, no-one spoil the result - I managed to get to the 2nd half kickoff last night, and have avoided the other threads so far... Given that the Colts aren't there, I'm on the Giants side. Why the Colts? I have no idea, other than that they caught my eye in the first game I saw this year on satellite. First full game ever, really as it wasn't on UK tv for years. Now I'm just rambling... JB

They had a practice of it on Thursday showing them exactly where to go and what to do. They were staged just outside the south end of the building and ran in on que. There was special security to ensure that after the performance none tried to stick around and catch a peek of the game for free. For their troubles they got souvenior t-shirts and pizza after the show. Phoenix did a great job with the whole event (not just saying that because I live here). The parties and a-list events were amazing. This goes on in Hollywood and NYC 7/24 but for Phoenix it was pretty special. Coupled with the PGA event going on at the same time, plus the Suns were home Thursday night, it was a pretty rockin time all around. Good for the economy. Phoenix is most likely going to bid for the 2012 Superbowl. Dave

I've seen them live several times, and they always do a very good job and put on a very professional show (with freaky good sound too). Insane number of guitar swaps. Their tech crew earns its money. The Traveling Wilburys stuff remains among my favorite ever. Hard to believe that's been almost 20 years! Where does the time go? "Thy Wilbury Done"

I thought he did a good good job and the band sounded very good. He sure looked very happy to be there. Mike Campbell has always been under rated in my book. My biggest problem with Petty's sound is that I don't happen to be a fan of that "Rickenbacker" electric guitar sound that Petty seems to love.

At least it wasn't a lip-sync fake like past super bowl shows (or if it was a fake, it sure fooled me). Like someone else said, would you rather have some Snoop-Doggie-Puppy-Turd-Fuzzy-Face-Bow-Wow-Boogie rap show? Tom Petty was a great choice.

The staging - set-up - and strike - are the real tricks - live sound for 80,000 - and for live TV on a one-shot deal is a production nightmare - I thought they pulled it off fine.
