nice, need to do something about that p/g outline. Is it in the finish or just a color?

unfortunately, the top under the pickguard didn't "Patina" as the rest of it did so, I'm guessing it's in the wood, not just the finish I consult with the boys up in New Hartford.

These guitars have nice chunky neck profiles.

yup...

11 days in transit... the top has some finish cracks that either weren't disclosed, or occurred in transit... I'm not sweatin' it with that ugly pickguard shadow however.

she's a great player and sounds wonderful.... Big Dreadnaught Sound..

"I'm not sweatin' it with that ugly pickguard shadow however."

So GO WITH IT man ! Restore it with another '57 J-45-esque vintage looking pickguard, which had probably resided comfortably there through most of those 41 years. It's the guitar's talisman - she probably misses it - feeling naked without it. BTW Greven makes some really nice dark tortoise colored non-threatening to Endangered species - type material :

And congratulations on your snag! I am sure it is a wonderful sounding instrument. And these early O's are the coolest!

I have a 3-panel DB of the same vintage, in similar condition. I keep thinking about having it restored at the factory, but it plays and sounds killer. So, do I spend a bunch of dough making a $200 guitar look great but not sound any better, or continue to enjoy it as it is?

Leave the $200 guitar the way it is... And let it continue to surprise people!

The pickguard area will darken over time. It WILL happen in your lifetime, Jeff.

Hang it in a well lit room, the sunshine will darken it.

My Martin 12 had a bumber sticker applied to the top when "someone" was young and stupid. It was on there for 15 years and when removed, 20 years ago, it left a similar ghost. You can't even tell it was there now. The only thing that shows is where the same "someone" used fingernail polish remover to get the sticky stuff off after removing the sticker. It's just a small spot and hasn't changed her sound at all.

For anybody who's never played one of the old shiny bowls, you're in for a huge surprise. They have a really big sound, almost like an old dreadnaught, except they have mid range to spare. They have power over the entire range.

Ovation tried to capture it with the new scalloped X bracing but I don't think they did (and the new guitars are terrific guitars). Temp's was the first one I ever played after he bought it on ebay and I liberated it from a pawn shop in Hollywood and I was surprised as hell. It was after that that I bought a Deluxe Balladeer for myself and then moved up to a GC DB.

Everybody should have a shiny bowl in their collection......
