Location: Chicago | Another thread got me curious: Superficially, the '08 Adamas Collector's resembles the 1581-5 RI. The "contour v. deep bowl" threads have been inconclusive. Can slots and carvings affect the acoustic sound of a guitar?
Has anyone been able to play an '08 and a 1581 side-by side? How about the plugged-in sound? |

| Well after now buying and sell more than a few Adamas 1's in the past few years myself, I have yet to compare the 1's to an Adamas 2. I am quite sure there is little difference in sound, so if the only comparison is sound reproduction then I'd say there is not much difference.
The draw for me is that fantastic sound but with the bling. That bling holds it's value better than any Ovation guitar I have ever owned. I took a slight loss on my CL and it took me 2 years to sell. My Adamas's went real well in the end. No loss and some profit actually.
I think the only differnce with the 08 collectors from the 1587's is the body binding? And the fact that it is inlayed with the 08 status.
NOw the collectors Adamas market has some value as well, so all in all it is a great great guitar, if your willing to go the price you'll retain most of its value and in several years it may be worth more.

The '08 has a wide neck which would really appeal to me and the contour and the cutaway and the bling...
Soundwise, probably what moody said.

In my work, I have met people who have Hot Wheels cars, still in the box (on the card, really).
The kids don't get to play with 'em.
Do you buy a low-numbered, limited-edition, $5000 guitar to Play, or look at?

Location: Boise, Idaho | Number 11/12 of the OFC guitar gets played almost daily. I don't buy anything to collect. My neighbor called me a guitar collector, but I didn't think I fit that mold. I play the collectible guitars more than I play the cheap ones. Collecting always has a connotation of storing, like those Hot Wheels cars, with the intent of selling when the value goes up. I like to use stuff and don't like selling it to someone else. Besides, the value of most "collectible" stuff usually goes down. |

If I DID have that sort of cash, and if the guitar had the features and playability that made me want it that bad, I'd play it. No question.
Then again, realistically, would I spend $5k on a guitar?

My dealer (Al) says it's just 'bout ready to ship. I had to have a little custom "tweek" included which slowed it down a bit. Ya'll know me - I hate to buy straight off the rack. I guess getting the rosewood sides to stick to the adamas top wasn't so easy.

Muzza......I thought that if I answered as best I could, even with my limited experience, the "Sound" question. I might have the option of adding just what I feel the carvings and extras on these high end ovations are worth. ? This question , and comments about the uslessness of the carvings has come up time and time again, sometimes in a thread where I am trying to sell one of these highly figured Adamas's. SO take it for what it's worth, sorry if I did not keep the answer within the given parameters. I'll try harder on the next one.

Yeah, I'd play the $5000 guitar in a heartbeat. My Adamas's are so freekin tough with that carbon fiber top and round bowl, they are the ultimate gigging guitars! You bump a $5000 Taylor on a microphone and you'll pass out from the divits and scratches it will leave. he Resale value comes up very quick the second it happens...... But no sweaton me.....my guitars are bullet proof...... I just keep smiling and playing and answering questions from the audience about my "Strange" but Beautiful guitars after each set.

It really needs to be viewed, held, played, plugged in and marveled at! Is it expensive? Yes it is (although less than you'd expect). It is one of the most responsive and versatile guitars I own and is by far one of the best looking. I have played it for nearly four months now and before several audiences both big and small: everyone has marveled at it and many have come up to ask about it: and I relish the opportunity to tell them about this great guitar and the great company that makes it. How does it compare to the 1587? I don't know because I don't have one. I do know how it compares to a 1687: it has a slightly softer voice (although since I am not able to stand in front of the guitar: it may not be that different), and it is much lighter. What I do know is that the hand laid contour bowl is one of the most balanced Ovation/Adamas products I have ever played...this guitar is so light you can hardly believe it. The suspended top is a breakthrough and does wonders for the sound...The neck is balanced and the action is great (I did remove one shim); The stock tuners work great and the guitar stays in tune remarkably well; the looks are fabulous and even the pickguard that many have complained about is not that noticeable and does its job...
I will have this at Amelia and every where else the OFC meets this year that I can attend. Tupp will probably have his at the Island as well (just a guess: maybe not since he's flying) but anyone is welcome to try it out!
It is a great guitar and yes, I am proud to own it!

Location: Colorado | On topic - I bought #43 years ago to be played - and it was played nonstop - I don't think there is an orig. SH that was played more...the professor did one of the more comprehensive comparisons of two guitars - I've ever read...not sure of how the post started...bottom line do what you want - with the guitar you want...heavens - I modified my orig SH - to collectors' chagrins...but it made it a better players tool. I'm guessing the 08 collectors is phenomenal... |
