The Wilson sisters were just getting back from performing "Stairway to Heaven" for Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center Honors when they heard their band has been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "No pressure or anything," Ann Wilson says, laughing.

Believe it or not, 30 years ago Heart was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. They brought it!

I've done a quick YouTube survey (current live shows)... don't see Ovations onstage anymore. Oh well.

They may not use Ovations any more, but they sure put Ovation on the map in my book. I can't think of Heart without thinking of Nancy playing her O.

I'll never forget being in my dorm room at college and listening to Barracuda and someone down the hall yelling, "Turn that up!" Everyone loved Heart. I still do. I've got an old bootleg of them on a Seattle TV program maybe 6 months before they made it big. They were a little loose. You could still see the possibilities.

I also remember sitting in a dorm room in 76 or 77, fingerpicking along to Dreamboat Annie, before I got my first Ovation. I can't say they were the reason I bought an Ovation, but they probably had something to do with it. I'm not sure I knew what an Adamas was at that point, though. Ann had a great voice. I typically bought albums that I could sing along with, but Heart was an exception. They were albums just for listening.

I gotta throw a curve on this thread, sorry.

Being from Seattle, I have a special spot in my heart for Heart, but the real story is Rush being finally considered. I mean really... the only bands to have more consecutive gold records are the Stones and the Beatles... 24 Gold, 14 Platinum (3 multi).

It's about F'n time. Nearly 45 years of rockin' the stage and putting out hit after hit should make up for Geddy's voice.

Not to mention since the 70s Alex has been AND STILL IS PLAYING OVATIONS ON STAGE

I'm with you, Damon! Reading this thread, that's what I was thinking. And, since I've just had a good read of the History book, I wondered that Alex wasn't even mentioned!

Maybe they are finally getting their heads out of their collective butts at HOF, but I doubt it. Blue Oyster Cult is listed as a main influence of just about every hard rock band that has already been inducted and of course many that haven't. Besides the music, the Lasers, the diaeresis or umlaut used in names, and riding a Harley onto the stage all inspired the Kiss, ELO, TSO stage acts of the future. Their music has been in some of the most popular cult movies and while the recent Roadie wasn't about them, they sure got mentioned a lot and actually DID tour Brazil for the first time last year after the movie came out. And oh yeah.... lets not forget the most popular Saturday Night Live skit ever... "More Cowbell !!!" . Finally, for what it's worth.... Don't Fear the Reaper was written and initially recorded using an Ovation.

NINB (no, I'm not bitter)

No insult to Rush or BOC intended, guys. I simply have strong nostalgia for the days when good music seemed delivered on Ovation/Adamas. From the high-tech guys (McLaughlin, Glen C) to rockers everywhere. Heart was (is) a great blend of guitar, voice and female mojo! Regarding the sub-thread that developed ("ROR HOF sucks": I agree. It's the same with awards and lists everywhere, all the time is it not? The 100 "best" guitarists or albums will invariably suck for good reasons...

exactly why I called them a sham..........

Come on.......DONNA SUMMER......Rock & Roll........don't even roll off the tongue properly.

They should have a R&R HOF and a Music HOF if they want to add the Summers of the world......

and Damon.........RUSH is another reason the HOF is a joke.

May as well take this WAY OT, but I'm still waiting for the NFL to recognize Jim Plunkett, the only 2 time winning QB NOT in the HOF. Not to mention, Heisman Trophy winner (beating Manning and Thiesman, and the first Latino to get it), Maxwell award, and several passing, touchdown, and yardage records for the PAC 8 while in college.

Superbowl MVP (again, only Latino to do so), and only 1 of 4 people ever to win the Heisman and SB MVP.

All HOF's are a joke.

I wish I knew the criteria.  Calling it Rock and Roll hall of fame and then adding Donna Summer is odd, but there MUST be SOME criteria they are using regardless of the title.  Every time I think I have a group of theories, I look at the list and many don't seem to fit it.  Sometimes people get inducted for reasons that have little to do with music they themselves created but rather something they did, but again, there doesn't seem to be a hard rule.

As far as lists, I generally agree, but the Hall of Fame isn't really a list.  The bands are nominated and voted on after meeting certain criteria.  Some of the criteria as posted on their website...

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

The Foundation’s nominating committee selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of more than 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes - and more than 50 percent of the vote - are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.

So, 301 (out of 600) "historians and members of the music industry" Voted for Donna Summer for some reason.

"First-time nominees Rush, Deep Purple, N.W.A., Public Enemy, Albert King, The Marvelettes and Procol Harum join previously nominated acts Chic, Heart, Donna Summer, Kraftwerk, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Randy Newman, Paul Butterfield Blues Band and The Meters."

It's odd to say the least.

Once they allowed Rap "artists" to be nominated... That proved that it isn't about Music.

If any one of 100 singers had died last year with as many hits as Donna Summer had. They would have gotten the award posthumously. Dying is a guarantee to get in one HOF or the other. Disco is short for discomfort, to me. The Rock and Roll HOF is legendary for giving awards to folks who did not deserve it. I don't like Rush, but they have an enormous following. They may not have the "Freak" credentals that some of the others have. This Gangnam idiot Psy will probably get it next year. No rap, hip-hop "artist" should ever get it. It's synchronized poetry, with someone else's stolen music.
