It was suggested, so I have created the thread.

It is hard to talk about topics the revolve around sound, without posting ...sound. I would guess the best thing to do, to learn about what guitars sound like or play like is it see them and hear them. With that in mind, is there going to be a gathering of O heads in southern California anytime soon ?

My hope is to find out what I like in my price range. My fear is what I like will NOT be in my price range and if that dude had NOT brought out that custom ordered , only enough wood from the tree of the ancients to make ONE guitar, topped Ovation, I would have been fine with a simple under appreciated, possibly made in Korea, but fine sounding, 12 string and have gone away happy.

Wanna play something that will ruin you for other guitars?
I played this Slothead at Damon's house!

Price range : $500 or less. Still trying to determine if my wants are reasonable and within that budget.

Southern California = South of Santa Barbara and north of Mexico ? Where I am is the "high desert" and I doubt anyone hangs out here, so I would expect to need to travel a bit. The corridor of quicker travel would be north of the 91 freeway, but if there were a serious meeting of the minds in San Diego, I could make the effort.

You might find a slothead in that price range. It's finding the rest of the guitar that goes with it that might be difficult.

That's pretty much a given for most of us.

IMHO with a $500 budget you ought to be able to find a nice, used 12 string O that's sweet sounding and easy playing enough to keep you happy for quite awhile... until of course... you play an Adamas and decide you must have one of those!  LOL

And chances are good that the O will still be worth around what it cost you... if you decide to sell it.

How good of deal you're able to find will likely be determined by how long you're willing to wait for that perfect one to come along.   Want divided by Budget multiplied by Impatience equals Your Choice

I'm still in the learning curve. I don't know what model would put a smile on my face. They're all just numbers and pictures , right now. I've thought the Adamas line was cool since they came out, but since I just play for my own pleasure, that kind of money is just not justified. ( I'm waiting to find that want ad of the wife selling off the husbands stuff REALLY cheap, in a divorce fight, to get one. )

There is probably an opportunistic vulture in most of us. Just go with patience, for now.

Playing for your own pleasure may be the ONLY thing that justifies spending a lot on a guitar. Almost all Ovations sound good plugged in. It's when you're home playing for yourself, family, or friends, that you want the best acoustic sound possible.....

The original question was about trying to get together with other Ovation owners so that he could try out various Ovation models in Southern California. He even said he could drive as far as San Diego if needed.

Everyone seems to be ignoring the initial request of a SoCal gathering....or the opportunity to meet and try a few guitars.

The best thing would be to go to someone's house that has an extensive collection. Then you can hear the uniqueness of each model in peace and quiet, really spend some quality time with each chosen instrument. Gatherings can be a bit chaotic.

Crap. I'm booked that day, Slipkid.

I'd host something, but I'm in NorCal. Slightly closer than Algonac, but my place lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. But if something can get planned for a gathering, I'll make it and bring a few things.

Anything during the NAMM show within driving range of Anaheim should work.

Maybe Bruce or Tony could chime in. They both have a nice assortment.

NAMM would be fun. But, I thought you had to be in the industry to get in.

Just to make sure everyone understands, I was just wondering if there was going to BE a gathering. I feel kinda' awkward being the new guy and instigating a meeting at some one else's place.

The original museum is down the road from my house. It's a bowling alley, now. They finally took all the "fort" look wood slats off a year or two ago. The NEW museum is by the 15 freeway in Victorville. Of course, that is closed because the kids took the show to Branson, Missouri.
