On the radio here, we get to hear all their hits ('break on through, the end, light my fire, 21st century fox, love her madly, hello i love you, la woman, riders on the storm....). They were a unique band with eclectic tastes. They wrote so many different kinds of songs that most people had to like at least one of their tunes.

They had some great songs. My favorite song of theirs is Riders on the storm. I think I saw Morrison's grave in Paris?

I found it interesting that Manzarek played keys with his right hand and a bass keyboard with his left. Reminds of me of that scene from El Marachi with the keyboard player playing everything, bass, drums, guitar, horns etc ... I have to admit ... keyboard players have the nicest toys.

Some say (ok me) that a sign of a great tune is one that transcends the artists or arrangements and I think the doors may have been more genius than given credit. I can't think of another rock band that's been covered in so many genre's except maybe for the Beatles and I think their pallet of styles may have been deeper. Even the few Doors tunes that have been used for Musak still stand up and are quite nice. In a couple of cases I like the cover more than the original and think that's just a sign of a great tune. One that someone else can make their own, and it's still a great tune.

You're not alone. I never got 'em either. There's 5 or 6 songs that I can groove to, but some stuff is beyond me. I want to like 'em so I can be in the cool crowd, but I guess I'm just not cool enough. 'Touch Me' is on my top least favorite songs of all time. I think the song would have suited Tom Jones much better.

Always, kinda amazes me when I go to someone's house and they're still listening to the same old same old from their distant past - it's like they stayed stuck in one era.

As example, I thought The Lettermen version of Light My Fire at the time, and contectually is/was actually better than the Doors, although I like the doors version too, I think it's a better Lettermen tune.

Another trio worth mentioning that puts out a very full complex sound is ZZ Top. Now THAT stuff, I get! Edited by muzza 2012-03-17 11:07 PM

I was pretty young at the time and wasn't aware of just how creative, expressive, talented, and dark Morrison was. The program is full of live performances, music, and behind the scene stuff from the band. Very cool.
