Location: Orlando, FL | I guess this fits in with the other Ovation graphic designs. I can't see owning one, not my cup o hot steamy beverage.
Will this bring new users into the Ovation fold? I think it could, if it actually ends up in music stores. It may get kids to pick one up and check it out. Most kids buying their first (or second) guitar are driven primarily by what looks, or seems cool. If they pick one up because they like the design, it may start them off as life long Ovation fans.
Will they find their way into music stores? I've never seen one of the DJ Ashba guitars in a brick and mortar shop. Have you?
We'll see.

Location: Seacoast NH | I'm not a big fan of that design in any way...far too jumbled and chaotic for my sensibilities. I'm more of a classic art fan than modern I suppose. I would never buy this, just strikes me as "Huh? What the?"
I was much more interested in some of the other designs, particularly the Mona Lisa one, the one with the tree branches backlit by the orange sky, or the one that looked like it was a see-through top showing all the bracing and electronic goodies. |

Sara fell in love with the Red Flame hanging on the wall in Guitar Center and "made" me buy it for her. She was 13 or 14 yrs old looking for her first full size real guitar after her 3/4 size Applause. So yeah I think you're right about the appearance grabbing kids' attention. She now has the Red Flame, an Adamas UTE, and a Preacher Deluxe in her collection, plus a few others.
If the Rock The Top contest sells guitars and helps rejuvenate the brand, great! |

Personally, I'd rather Arthur paint a sunburst on one for me. Someone needs to have a talk with the judges. There were some really cool looking designs, this isn't one of them. |

These same marketing geniuses that picked that are still trying to sell those Heroin Diaries guitars.
And have you seen anyone who actually Plays a DJ Ashba guitar?
DJ Ashba doesn't play a DJ Ashba guitar. Kinda like a Hello Kittie guitar, y'know?
I also think that "Kids" respect the same things as we do... Things that actually look Good.
The "Kids" don't like that stuff... Just some marketing whiz Thinks that the kids will like this stuff.
That is the kind of crap your Mother buys you cuz she wants to be cool.
Like the phony hippie crap that Coca-cola and VW tried to push on us in the 70's.
BTW-- People LIKE my Orange Flamer when I bring it out.

I am a big fan of minimalism in design and during my 40 year career in sign making the vast majority of the time customers selected my design to buy even when I was far from the lowest bid they had. My three favorite designed items are the Shell logo (by the genius designer Raymond Loewey who also designed the Studebaker Avanti), early split front window VW buses, and my Ovation Balladeer. I wish I could have gotten the tools I downloaded to work for that contest. My Celtic Fusion design blew that one away. I'll post it someday when I finish it up in my design software. When I can afford it I'm going to have it made. |

There MAY be some people out there that would buy one if they could, but my guess is most of those individuals wouldn't have the money anyway.
I am a firm believer in the use of innovation, but trying to re-invent the wheel is a bit beyond my understanding.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I think my favorite design concepts have been minimalist. My all-time favorite Logo/Design is actually just a color. It's a red, but not just any red. It's Target Red. I have a signed print from Peter Maxx who "invented" it if that's the appropriate term for Target Red. There have been target commercials where the target doesn't appear until the end, or it's just a blip somewhere, but there is liberal use of the color Target Red and you know exactly what store the commercial is from.
As far as the designs... which ones I like, and which ones I would buy are two separate conversations. I think most of the designs are great, but I'm not into pictures on guitars. I have one that I have mentioned before as I have a connection to it, but in general, they are just fun to look at for me. My favorites were the Steampunk and the one that looked like an xray showing the bracing pattern. Both very clever. I wish I could do my design, but I couldn't figure out how to get it high quality enough... I actually had two idea's, one was closer to MWoody's idea.

Yes I have seen several people play the dj ashba guitars out and the heroin diaries guitar was all over LA ink

Location: Connersville, Indiana | IMO, they went way out there with that design, Might as well have two knobs on the guitar, you pull them out and you get and etch a Sketch on a white guitar.  Turn the knobs, draw a Logo for every gig.

I'll get a decent pre-amp in it just in case I have to play anything acoustic or I'll make a point of it. After the show, have anybody who asks for an autograph sign it as well. LOL.. too funny.. Or maybe just draw some sort of logo and sayings related to the venue I'm playing. Change it for every gig.. Someone will probably do it before me, or has already done it, but that's just a cool idea. |
