Joined: November 2008 Posts: 400 Location: Northwest Arkansas | I just ordered a Custom Legend 2079AX. I know it's foreign made. But is it still as good as the Legend name? I have an Adamas. I haven't heard anything sound like IT. I wanted to come to the experts and ask you all what you thought. Be TOTALLY honest. This is a lot of do-re-mi! I know you'll deal straight with me. Is this thing gonna sound great or is it just another plastic topped guitar? I have 3 Celebrities and they have their place. I just want a really good guitar. I play in a loud 70's rock band and I need a guitar that can handle it. I have a TA 200 Trace Elliot acoustic rig. It's 200 watts. So it'll get loud enough. I just want to hear your comments. Please. Oh and does it have a great acoustic sound! I'm ordering it from a local music store. I love the way Ovations play. I know I will have 10 or more. I just wanna know if this is worth the price. Can't speak directly to the AX, but the LX I played sounded and felt completely different than mine. Personally, I care for LX necks. Just a preference though. Good luck... hope you love it. I just wanna know how it plays and sounds. I know almost all guitars have their little differences. Basically most models are close to the same. You get duds and you get one, once in a while, that smokes. I just wanna hear from someone who has one and from you guys who have played one. All they have at my store are Celebrities.

I think most of the comparative differences have been noted from their spec sheets and not actual playing. But that's not surprising since a lot of the active paricipants on this board prefer the USA models. There are still some LX models available, but they do carry a price premium. Plus, once in a while you see some on the used market. I've never played, or even seen, an AX in a store so I can't give you any feedback. I have an LX and while some would consider it entry level, I think it sounds amazing (to me). I guess that's all that matters. Maybe you can tell us what you think when yours arrives. Congrats on your purchase! Edited by Guitsome 2012-02-19 7:14 AM

To my ears Original and K-bar are pretty hard to separate sonically. Biggest difference is the neck profile and of course electronics changed over the years. LX is a different animal. Different sound. Not better or worse than those that came before it. Just different. I have no experience with AX but for the money would seem like a good deal.

There's probably less than a handful of people here that have even played one. Many of us have Custom Legends but they're one of the other 3 types that StandingO spoke to. The build differences are about all any of us know here. Is it still as good as the Legend name? I don't know, but I tend to doubt it. Since you've taken the plunge and ordered one, try to hook up with a nearby member that has an American model, and do your own comparison. Please share if you do. My opinion would be go with the Al DiMeola model. I have the original pre/LX era AD Custom Legend, and it's my go to for playing live 9 outta 10 times. Not sure if the neck profile changed with the newer DiMeola models.

I don't have to buy it. The dealer has to buy so many and he was happy to order it. I will give you my educated opinion on it.

That, and the price. Middle of January (I'm at a APO address, USPS is our only option) a SG shows up. Nice guitar, in another life I would of said thanks, I'll just keep it. But no, I really wanted the OVATION. I called MF, of course the mibt used MT37 is gone so I said send me a 2078 TX. about the same as the MT but less the "styling" a few days later I get the back order notice. I call MF and say okay, theres a nice used 2778AX send me that. All the while I'm feeling pretty good, the guitar models are getting nicer and the prices aren't changing...much. So, today is Feb 27, 2 months and a week, and STILL NO GUITAR. not to mention, during this time at least one and maybe two really nice guitars have been offered here. The customer service reps name is Helen Wait. You know, If you need help you'll have to go to Helen Wait.

I'm sure you can get an MT37 at a deal and get it shipped easily. There's plenty of Ovation dealers with internet sites who will get you what you want ... shipping to an APO is easy. Good luck and make sure you get what you want.

I won't get it until the end of April. I'm getting it at less than half price new, so I'm not gonna say anything. But I have little patience. I guess I'll buy a beater, fix it up and sell it. It'll gimme something to do anyway!

I was seriously considering buying the asian version but went ahead and spend the extra cash on the american version. mikbrx you can find the MT37 online but a lot of places are sold out or on backorder. They run about 550-600 without case. I returned mine due to neck/fretboard issue that guitar tech pointed out (another thread lol). It played great but its like a mechanic telling you that the new car has some engine issues. Even though the car runs great you have that feeling that you should return it and avoid the headache later. If he hadn't pointed it out I would have kept it and been happy. Maybe I should do the same as you and purchase a used one for cheap and take my chances. Good luck on your search!

Let's see, there's a crack in the finish on the top below the bridge (this was NOT mentioned) the OP pre-amp is non-functioning (NOT mentioned) standard tuned open, it is so bad at the fifth fret as to be unplayable (NOT mentioned) the pick-up will not seat in the bridge (NOT mentioed), the heater hose on the van is leaking, the light is out in the laundry, the dog pooped on the floor, on the other hand, I put new strings on the Tele and it's sounding darn nice.....

The store I ordered it from let me know last Friday it's in customs. I should have it within 2 weeks. I am getting the best deal you can get on it. So I wait. At almost 13 she plays guitar, piano, flute and violin- so we're there often. While we waited, we saw an AX Balladeer hanging on the wall. Pulled it down and it sounded pretty darn good un-plugged, real good for ~half a grand. Any GAS thankfully passed without prodding me to take it home. With going on a 4 months wait? Hope you scored for less than $1K. I like Damon's DiMeola suggestion. Edited by Rooster 2012-05-31 11:06 AM

Joined: November 2008 Posts: 400 Location: Northwest Arkansas | Four months and 1 day after I ordered it. It came in. It sounds well balanced. The strings are set perfectly above the neck and it sounds reminiscent of my Adamas. It plays well and the neck is as straight as a board. Plugged in is even better. With the feedback buster in it I can crank it up all the way and not have any feedback. I am really surprised at the sound after hearing some of the comments. It sounds great. My luthier was the one who told me he thought it sounded great. Coming from him, it's a big compliment. He's really picky. Speaking from my perspective. A guy who owns an Adamas W597, a Martin D-35, and a Takamine I've had almost 20 years, this guitar sounds awesome. I've played guitar 34 years and right now I couldn't be happier.
