I love checking pawn shops and have found some great deals, but with the Bay and other resourses so available, the great finds are becoming less common. There is a shop quite near me. Yesterday I made my weekly drive by. There was an Ovation case by the door to the backroom. I asked the clerk about it and he said they had to send it to the factory for something, but that it was "one of those with the fiberglass tops". He knew nothing beyond that. Could be something special. Now I'll keep a constant eye out for it. He said they sent it out 6 weeks ago.

Anyone found any pawm shop jewels lately?

I picked up a mint Fender Acoustisonic Jr amp and cover at a pawn shop about a month ago. More amp than I'll ever need, but for $265 I couldn't pass it up.

Nice!

I don't check with PSs that often since many went to some type of pricing network . I'm not sure if its a service or just a corporate data base.

The last PS guitar I purchased was priced using eBay searches. When I made a counter-offer, the proprietor when to Ebay to see if I was in the 'ballpark'. He took $75 less than the tagged $325.

I haven't found any 'steals' in quite a while. :(

It also had an aftermarket PU of some kind added. Don't know if it works. Haven't plugged it in, yet

Not recently, but found my Pacemaker last year at a PS for $280. $150 is one helluva deal on a Legend w/ case if it's in decent shape.

I'm skeptical of shopping at pawn shops - they're basically just a way to sell stolen stuff. Having had several thousand dollars of stuff stolen from us and finding it here and there in pawnshops, I just can't bring myself to take the chance of taking home somebody's belongings that they lost at a bargain price.

I'm sure a lot of it is legit, but with ebay, craigslist, newspapers, and the like, who really needs to sell stuff to pawnshops if it's really yours? There are way more profitable ways to get cash for your belongings. Just my $ .02.

Back in the day, pawnshops were a quick and easy way to get some cash, as a loan or by selling something you felt you could do without. You did have the option of redeeming your ticket when you were fat again. I've done it myself to get dinner and some smokes (or smoke) when I was younger and poorer. Sure, it was a rip-off, but I knew that.

Odd that they would not have sent that guitar to the factory in the case by the door?

I got a first year slab Peavey T-60 PAF with "toaster" pickups and the original case for $180 a few months ago.

Haven't seen any sweet Os in the pawns, just celebs pretty much.

Damon (and others), I would have thought that especially here in the NW, Ovation guitars would be THE guitar. Much like Hawaii but for other reasons, this is not a good place for wood, unless your're growing it. But other than some used, and some new Celebs, I haven't seen an Ovation around here other than mine and other OFC members. I haven't seen any artist playing one.

I've had people visit who grew up in the area, have been players all their life, and never seen a high-end Ovation in person. Just thought it was odd.

I first went on the road in 1976 (began giging locally in 1975) with an Ovation Pacemaker 12...I toured for over 13 years before getting off of the road for a short time: I never saw an Adamas in any shop (and I visited some great music stores all around the country). I was aware of them through Guitar Player and some other magazines and I knew that some of the big cleb's of the time had played them: but I just bought my first Adamas last year...I have always bought and played Ovations, but it would have been great to have been able to have an Adamas available to try out somewhere down the road...Although, I think I have made up for it!

I saw my first Adamas probably about 1980 at the Weiser fiddle festival in Weiser, Idaho. I remember thinking that someone had copied Ovation and put a bunch of holes in the shoulders. I never got too close to it. One of the performers was jamming with it.
I think the next one I saw in this area was the Ute I bought a couple years ago.

I bought a 1983 collectors with the battery compartment flopping around on the inside. Screwed it back together, new battery, new strings. Great guitar. $125 with brown ovation case... :)

I don't know about other parts of the country, but around here the shops are VERY aware of what they are selling. Most are on the computer all day checking prices on what they have. It's hard to find even a decent price here much less a deal.

Last year I bought a mint like new American made Fender Sratocaster with a case on E-Bay from a pawn shop in Arizona.I paid a total of $500.00 for it to be shipped to the motor city. When I received it the neck said made in the USA but the body of the guitar just seemed different to me,so I called Fender and had them check the serial number of it and they verified that it was an American made BLACK Stratocaster.Oh S&%T the body of mine was natural blonde.I called the pawn shop up and told the guy that I was ripped off and I wanted a refund .He got all apologetic and asked me how we could fix this .Long story cut short I told him that the shipping alone was $60.00 so I would keep the guitar if he only charged me a $100.00 for the guitar and the shipping.
He accepted that.Meanwhile I took the guitar to my local dealer and asked him what it was and it turns out to be an 1998 American neck on a 2004 Mexican Deluxe Players Strat custom body.I looked on E-Bay and the necks alone are going for a couple hundred bucks so I think I did OK on it.
Although I beat the Pawn Shop Im sure they beat up the person who had to pawn the guitar . GWB

About eight years ago, I started playing with a group of attorneys who prefer 80's rock, so my Legend LTD was a bit out of its element. I decided to pick up a Les Paul knock-off and checked one of our local pawn shops that specializes in musical instruments, particularly guitars. He pulled out three Gibson Les Pauls, two of which were older studios and some odd ball model that had active electronics. The studios were o.k., but this black active electronics model was in outstanding condition. He said the owner inherited it from his uncle and had swapped it for a Marshall half stack. He wanted $800. I offered $600 and he took it. The thing that got me about this guitar is that it had a bolt-on neck, unlike a Les Paul with a set neck. I then photographed it and sent all the info back to Gibson. They confirmed that it was, indeed, a prototype from 1982, probably one of maybe three made, none ever sold, and that it probably was in some collection because of its excellent condition. They confirmed that it was, indeed, a prototype of a Les Paul body with upgraded features, including active electronics, but with a bolt-on neck. The bolt-on necks then appeared the following year on the new Invader model but with their own unique contoured bodies sans the active electronics.

Now that this thread has pretty much covered the PS git stories; my best PS buy was a Radio Shack model # 2006 police scanner 'bout twenty years ago. This was the last model that could receive the, at the time, current cell phone freqs. Plus it had a 'ton' of mods available. Our ever wise bureaucrats determined that election donations were more important than our rights to the air waves...

I paid $150 and sold it a year or so later on eBay for $625. At that time that was the highest bid for a RS2006. That scanner paid for a marine depth finder, a MotorGuide trolling and lotsa beer!

Having a scanner up to that time had enabled my family members and I to avoid some catastrophes and provided area crime activity alerts otherwise unavailable. Oh well...

Bottom line, well know what you want...
