I've read this term many times but don't have a clue what it is or why it works. Is it still in use today? Thanks. Jim

I seem to recall something on the tour along the lines of what Cliff stated, that the ring was the way to give the top a place to set.

This will allow it to move and groove as needed. It sort of reminds me how a speaker cone is mounted in in a flexible ring allowing the speaker to move in and out. Jim

Jim As a kid..I recall seeing some 3/4 x 3/4" mahogany strips of wood that were show and tell pieces to demonstrate the benefit of using carbon fiber in the guitar necks. On set of samples was just finished mahogany, the other set(better) had a strip of carbon fiber flatstock bonded on opposite sides. It effectively created an "I"-beam that was exremely rigid. Compared to the bend you could get in the solid mahogany piece, it was night and day. ... Talbot
