Went to an open mic last night at the Club Helsinki. You sign up and they give you a 15 minute time slot, do what you want.

Now I've not been to a lot of these but this did strike me as odd.

This kid gets up and does a 15 minute drum solo. Like all 15 minute drum solos it was 14 minutes too long.

Anyone else seen weird stuff?

a guy from the local group home whistleing "your a grand old flag" then singing "i've been working on the railroad" but forgetting the words.

strange comedy skits

a poet reading walt whitman's "oh captain my captain"

some guy doing a perverted version of minnie ripperton's "loving you" (oops that was me)

Two guys.... one with a guitar, and the other with a 40" Craftsman crosscut saw and a fiddle bow.
Thing was... I enjoyed it.
The guy who played the saw also holds the worlds record for riding the tallest uni-cycle. That process involved a construction crane in the Pontiac Silverdome.

Thought For The Day....
Just because you can do an open mic, doesn't mean you should.

Art can be a strange and painful experience.
Especially the weeding-out process.
But that's how we get there from here.

Legend is Jimi Hendrix would listen to any and all players, all night long. Just to find that ONE thing they did that was interesting, even if they didn't know it themselves.....

An original tune by a country music band, dressed as ghouls except for their cowboy hats singing a song called dead puppy. The word dead puppy was the only lyric, repeated over and over again. For five minutes. The audience was slack jawed.

I hate Bolero,(and I prefer to avoid the word 'hate')(except for the PDQ Bach version...with lyrics) it makes elevator music sound clever and creative.....but I would listen to THAT. once.

Wow, life is just rocketing by and I'm standing on the corner wondering where the bus is.

I've never even been to an open mike.

Six guys dressed in hula skirts and coconut bras singing about a guy exposing himself.
Also in a ski lodge.

I haven't been to an open mike lately, but the oddest thing I think I have seen is myself, stumbling through a bad version of "Rhymes and Reasons".

Maybe because I wasn't there and only saw it on video, or maybe because I tried for months to get this picture out of my mind, but I had completely forgotten about this one. Thanks a lot, Wabbit.

Why, you're very welcome, Mark. I'll try to work it into a conversation in another 6 months or so.

Guy plays/sings "Horse with No Name" and then "Wild World". Badly. Then plays them both again. More badly. Time wasn't up yet. So he played them both again. Most badly.

Over here , most go into the open -mic. thing halfheartedly , that goes for the audience just as much as for the performers , there are not many of these events , .. that`s maybe why ..

Hence the reason I fear the microphone

If you don't do an open mic this year, you'll be another year older when you do.

For the most part the few I've been to have been pretty good, but it never fail to amaze me the number of people who think they can sing, can't! Just watch the auditions for American Idol or America's Got Talent. (I just watch the audition faze)
Then there are those who are truly talented

Back in the Karioki days, I was in a hotel bar where they were doing karioki and the waitress asked if she could get me anything. I asked her to get a bucket for the gal that was singing. She didn't get it, even after I said "to see if she could carry a tune in it." Some people just don't have an ear for music and don't get it. They should stick to rap.

Well, it's off to another one.
West Stockbridge Mass tonight. I'll say "Hi" to Alice for ya'll.
Hopefully the strangest thing will be some guy singing originals with a Mr. Big shirt.

Anyone here as big a fan of the movie 'Duets' as me? Great flick. Huey Lewis can't really act but Gweneth Paltrow makes up for it. Lots of good karaoke and some bad.

Knock 'em dead out there Beal. I'm afraid if I played at an open mike at Mass, the people in the church would be nervously watching for lightning bolts.
