 Has anyone on this board had to change their personal appearence on the length of their hair or a beard , mustache to keep their job? I know that it is suppossed to be against the law to descriminate on those personal issues but we all know that it still exists in our real world.I once lost a job in 1972 because I wouldnt cut my hair to what the employer thought was a reasonible length.
We all know this still exists 36 years later.
The OFC has over 6000 different people from all walks of life from Lawyers & Doctors to Mechanics & Musicians ( WHO NEVER CUT THEIR HAIR CLIFF )on this board so I thought this would be an interesting question.
Has or does anyone had to conform to a rule like this to keep a job? GWB.

No... But I never apply for jobs where that SHOULD be a consideration.
But them kinda prejudiced jerks wouldn't hire me in the first place, since I have long-hair Before it was fashionable.
In 2005 I shaved my Beard to work in Kitchens without having to wear a "chin-net"...
Alot of the old-heads give me guff about my hair where I work now, but I am a maintenance man, so screw 'em... I don't work in the Office.

I'll let y'all know if the Big Boss ever freaks-out.

Oh for christ's sake... this isn't even vaugely interesting to anyone but hairstyle historians, nor is it even remotely amusing. Any more of this asinine crap and a whole bunch of us will join the Taylor board and leave you losers to deal with this inane garbage. Think.... If you need to prefix your post with "OT" it's probably a pile of shite.

They weren't talkin' 'bout Ovations either!

The last time I was over there (years ago) there was a big OT pizzing contest over Ford vs. Chevy.

To get or keep a job, get promoted, receive a paycheck, trim as required. Otherwise, keep the 'dos'/tatoos and pay the 'dues'!

Nature took care of most of my hair, so it's not much of an issue for me.

BTW: Paul. It's not healthy to keep things bottled up. Please tell us how you really feel! ;)

That FridayNight, Al's sittin' in the corner drinking rum and noodling on an Adamas.
I walked up to him with a guitar and asked him "Do you remember CSN&Y "Almost Cut My Hair"??
Al rolled his eyes & thought for a second or two . . . "yeh(?)".
I showed him "Am-G-D . . . repeats thru the verse . . then it's . . KINDof a C Walkdown . . ."

Al's like . . . "okay. ? ? "

"Cool. . . c'mon, let's go up & play it . . ."

"RightNOW?!?!?!?" he shreiked.

Al is the commensurate Trooper. Well Done, Sir.
y'just need t'KickStart him every once in a while.

As for myself, I was hired for my current job over 15 years ago, and I had long hair. It's varied in length (on both extremes) over my tenure, but when it was long, it was always presented "Professionally". It was always the quality of my work, my work ethic, and my reputation that always made an impression on our clients, not my appearance.

(Besides, in NYC, if y'wear long hair tied-back & dress all in black, you're perceived as being "Creative" . . ."

All that being said, I'd have to concur w/Messrs. Temp&Rooubische and ask why th'F@&K are we even HAVING this conversation?? . . .

Kick start? like an old Indian on a cold morning. That is an understatement. I have considered myself retired from performance for the past few years.

I get up on stage my guitar still in one of those open tunings matt had us use and I had a few shots of rum and just can't hear the damn thing to tune it. Matt walks over and says you want me to do that? of course, matt can tune in any circumstance but I was hoping the out of tune guitar would get me out of playing.

so we get to the second verse and cliff says "take this one" terriffic I have a tendancy to remember only one verse of tunes and sing them 3 times. So after the first line, cliff leans over and says "sing louder" As I lean into the growl for the next line out of the corner of my eye I see the guy at the board turn up my mic. So I knew I nearly blew the walls down.

But like I tell my nephew if you sit at home in front of the TV you never have any stories to tell.

well, back in college, I followed a couple of bims into an education course. I was really in lust with both of them, one in particular and would have followed her to the depths of the earth. Anyway, I kinda liked the education thing and stuck around long after the bims were gone, and often I was the only guy in the class which was kinda cool.

So it is time for me to do my student teaching, I went to the head of the department to get my assignment. He told me some BS Like "alex I would have no problem with you teaching my own childern but I cannot send you into the public schools with the way you look, dress and THINK." Yes he did say think.

I walked out of his office went to the registrar and grabbed a pile of drop/add slips. I saw one prof in the hall got him to sign me out of one class then went to see my Ed teacher. I walked into her office asked her to sign my drop slip, she realized something was wrong and pressed me on it. I finally gave in and told her the story. She then asked me for a week to take care of the situation. She told me as a black woman she could not allow discrimmination of any type and she would put her job on the line for me because as far as she was concerned I was her best student. (news to me)

within 3 days I had my assignment, (one of the toughest elementary schools in Camden NJ I might add) and the head of the department never spoke to me again.

every job I had, I held with long hair and will continue to do so with no matter how much of it is left.

kinda fitting you got me to play that tune with you cliff.

The airline is quite picky on grooming and haircuts. They even worry about the color bra the flight attendants wear! WTF is up with that? It's not like anybody sees them through the thick polyester uniforms.

Haircuts are tax deductible at least.

Well, 4 years ago I was in a professional position with hair halfway down my back, but always in a ponytail. I did cut it all off that summer, not due to the job, but due to a particularly hot day.

Now I couldn't say for sure, but I do have a new job making 2x what I did prior to the cutoff, so...

I have been told in interviews that I would need to cut my hair and on one I even remember being asked to shave facial hair off (At Sherwin Williams... friggin paint!).

I kindly refused those positions.

Thank You Al! Right On!

I'm Not giving in an inch to Fear...

Yeah, I pride myself with looking like an Old Freak!
[Yeah, I know that I'm too old for this crap, and I'm not a kid anymore... yada yada]
But I let the quality of my work speak for itself on the job.

"I'm one of the best workers you got... Don't like my hair? Bite Me!"

 CrimsonLake has the perfect picture for this post.

Do you think Cousin It would of been fired from the Addams Family Show if he would of shaved himself? Would that be reverse discrimination??

Somebody tell  Paul Templeman  to get off the Taylor board and get back here and that were just trying to have a little :D fun :D with this subject.

Long hair & guitars do have something in common.GWB
