And of those who have, any wish you hadn't? Thinking about it, but there are some people I'd rather not hear from.

What have your experiences been?

If I had your talent, I probably would. But since I don't, I won't.

Never did Facebook but I did Myspace for a while. Everybody said I needed to do it, but it was a waste of time. Nothing but foolish comments from kids.

I've never been much of a "joiner" anyway. ('til I found this place, that is). I spend WAY too much time on the computer as it is, but at least here my time isn't wasted.

Nah, Iffy, I'm not thinking of posting music or even mentioning it. There are some people whose names now escape me that I wouldn't mind hearing from if they happen to remember mine - former co-workers, guys I was in the service with - that sort of thing.

I don't want to stalk old girl friends or even hear from them, but if you put your name out there, it's out there for everyone. I know of one person who had a very negative experience, and I was curious if that was the exception or the rule.

If you join Facebook, you don't have to accept 'invites' from anyone. I personally don't like Facebook. I don't care if my cousin Terry turned out to be Brad Pitt after she took the "who do you look like" Quiz.

MySpace, is equally goofy, but I confess I kind of like it. Over there you don't have to have contact with anyone you don't want to either ~ you are always asked first, an.

I use my MySpace page for all of my photography, blog posting B.S., etc. It's fun when I have nothing else better to do. Facebook is boring by comparison. Then again, my page is pretty psycho, so I guess it's all about personal preference. I can tell you that I have heard from people I haven't heard from in thirty years, and that was PRETTY scary, so most likely, there is SOMEONE out there trying to look YOU up, too, heheh.

I've pretty much given up on MySpace. I have a presence on Facebook, but Ning is really the next evolution in Social Networking, where everyone truly has their own social networks... yes PLURAL....

That's the problem I have with Facebook and MySpace and most of the other several hundred social networks (Bebo, Myyearbook, MyLife) .. Unless you somewhat circumvent the system, having several completely unrelated social networks is very difficult, where Ning encourages it AND you don't have to deal with ads and adware popping up everywhere interfering.

On Ning, with one login, as example you can have your Guitar Player group of friends, your Service Organization or Church group friends, your Bondage and Deviant friends, your Companies clients, and they are all separate, except to you.

I use Ning for involvement in several professional organizations as well as fun stuff.

I've never even seen the Facebook website.

Someone told me if I went on there, then all kinds of people from my past would be able to find me. That clinched it for me right there. :)

Those I wanted to stay in touch with, I did.

I am both on myspace and facebook.
Not real happy with either of them but people who want to book want to advertise a myspace page where they can check out music and pics.

my other myspace is for my business and I can honestly find no real positives for that except that it is something you are now expected to have

I have facebook, I use it only as a way to keep in touch with friends and co workers, nothing else I expect from it which is nice as I don't have any problems with how I use it.

Miles,

You have bondage & deviant friends? Very interesting ... (and NO, I am NOT interested in those things in any way but still interesting, lol)

I agree that the way to go is Ning.

I got roped into the Facebook thing by my sister in law. I don't look at it much but I have got in touch with a few old friends from many years ago.

There's a lot of crap on there and I can't understand why some people love to tell you what they're doing every minute of the day.

You can be quite selective as to who contacts you and what anyone can see about you. It's also not that easy to find people unless they have a really strange name. If you're looking for your old friend, Bob Smith, you'll find there's hundreds of Bob Smiths to choose from. I can't be bothered searching through 500 names to find someone I know.

For those Interested... here is a list of a few social networking sites and some descriptions.

Wiki Social Networks list

Of the ones that seem to be the most popular...

This link Top 10 Reviews while doesn't really "review" it does give a list of features. I assume Ning isn't listed because while they "rate" things like profiles, security, and adverts on these other sites, on Ning the site owner is in control of all of those features which is what sets it apart. Not plugging Ning here, I was just curious why it wasn't listed and had to go digging.

Regardless of the intentions of the networks out there... they break down somewhat like this. Keep in mind that most of the networks share similar features, but, for whatever reason some are more popular than others to different people.

MySpace: Geared toward the arts and media. Everything from poetry to music to movies etc.. It is mostly a younger crowd (under 30) but that is changing. It's got a ton of advertising that seems to constantly bombard, and the "social aspect" is geared to "meeting" people. Be they clients, folks with similar interest, or just to see how many friends you can get.

Facebook: Geared more toward personal connections. Not just an arbitrary group of people, but people in your family, in your area, profession or area of interest. It's a bit more "professional" looking and many businesses and even government entities use facebook as part of marketing.

LinkedIN: Networking in the traditional business sense of the word. They will actually shut you down if you try to just "friend" people at random. Great for Marketing, Sales and IT people who's "network" of clients and associates runs long and wide.

Ning: Allows individuals to build their own social networks. Great for Families, Clubs, Organizations, Businesses, and Projects. The only Social Network I know of that allows full customization and branding.

MyYearbook: As one might think, geared toward high-school kids and actually developed by a couple of teenagers. It focuses on general interests but is geared toward the younger crowd and helps them learn safe computing as well. I really like this site for the sheer genius of the design and the interaction it promotes. As example you collect virtual money for prizes that you can donate. The owners of the site match those donations with REAL money to those charities.. Pretty cool concept.

As a Husband and Father of three Daughters I have to share my personal definitions:

My Space - Where I get to sit and think. It has a roll of TP nearby (because I checked it first) and usually a Stewmac catalog or Musiciansfriend tucked in a drawer.

Instant Message - Usually delivered via non-verbal communication. Although mostly negative and delivered with crossed arms there was the occasional "All is well and I'm Ready".

Face Book - Two words of Fatherly direction after getting the midterm report.

Google - What I try not to do around my Wife when I see a Hottie...

Twitter - A beam of hormonally charged energy that Girls try to nonchalauntly (sp) shoot at the Boys. Some of these Boys are already holding a Negative charge and may be adversely affected to the point of decreased brain function.

Text Message - what you find on Sticky-Notes.

Losov, I've found two long lost good friends on Facebook. I also MySpace. Being of a typical OFC age bracket, I do not see the need to be in constant text or Twitter contact with the world. Both Facebook and MySpace allow me to keep track of individuals or musicians in a way that I can control. Kind of like coming here, when I want, but not being bothered otherwise.

You can keep your info as private as you like on Facebook, if you want to avoid that certain someone from finding you.

I set up a MySpace at the behest of younger siblings a few years ago...basically haven't touched it since.

Facebook is good for a way to keep in touch with old friends and family in other states. It keeps it in my mind to send quick messages so as not to let people feel like they've gotten lost or I don't care. Other than that, it's mostly just goofiness.

As far as I'm concerned, MySpace is for 13-year-old girls and the old perverts that are pursuing them...plus the fake porn profiles, which basically destroys any credibility or usefulness it has left.
