With lots of us having multiple guitars, some many more than others, do you keep a log of string changes or mark a calendar so you can keep track, or do you just let your ears tell you when it's time ?

If they are just in cases and not being used, don't care. I put new strings on guitars when I play them out. If I'm just playing for me (read practice) I just leave'em alone. If I take one out of the case that's been sitting, if I really want to hear what it sounds like, I put on new strings. If it's just for practice... I leave whatever is on them.

Sound and feel. Right now I have three that are badly in need of a string change. Both of my Morgans, and the old Yamaha. I have no excuses for the Morgans except I've been playing Ovations exclusively lately. The Yamaha is a different story. It is the "shop guitar", for regulars who didn't happen to bring one today. The guy who plays it the most LIKES dead strings. Go figure.

Same here. Usually it's a visual detection that triggers a change. I keep the strings wrapper/box in the case neck compartment. I guess I could also put the change date in there too... naw...

Hung Card-board labels-on-a-cord at the nut ( those that shops use for pricing ) until I ran out of labels , .. now I use bits of paper which get lost..
When strings get Older , it seems I adapt to `em, it influences the way I play ... is n`t that odd ..?
Not that I`m a virtuoso or anything ..

Does any-one .. Un -coil / Straighten strings .. and hangs `em to get them as " straight as possible " several weeks prior to use ..

Pretty much as Miles said.
If the guitar is not being played unless they are really rusty I'll leave them.

On the guitars I play regularly by sound

I put a small round paper sticker on the back of the headstock with the date changed and string type.

Sound and Feel. The strings I use tend to lose their tone as the strings start to feel "Stiff"
if that makes sense.

I write the date on the empty string pack and toss it in the case. Then I know what I put on there last. I just started doing that cuz someone here recommended it.

I also write it on my calendar. If the guitar sounds crappy to me I look on the calendar. If I haven't changed them this year, it must be time for a change...
If I just changed them last month, it must be ME!

By ear although for just practice I don't worry about it much unless they get really bad.

If only all strings were created equal. Intonation drives me nuts. Sometimes one or another string just won't intonate properly, or die quicker, so off with their heads! I do write down the dates of my changes, but I frequently ignore my own notes. Who do I think I am anyway??

I change them when the strings loose color under the first 3 frets. I keep every guitar string box i buy and stack them on top of each other in order of how much i like them lol. I'm trying to try all differnt types.

When the strings start sounding bad or get difficult to keep in tune, they get changed.

I hate changing strings, so I generally wait until they sound totally horrid (e.g., even worse than my lack of talent would normally make them sound), or they look crusty/rusty. I can't imagine keeping a log of string changes; seems too much like work.

Edit: I just realized, the Adamas has had the same strings for nearly two years. O.o
