I have a 2008C with the fancy gold foil binding. After a week or so of 90-100+ degree days (where I retreat to my cool basement and play the Adamas) and this morning I notice that where my arms lays against the body, the fancy gold foil has taken on a dull lead/silver coloration.

I this normal? Can it be brought back or do I just live with it?

I can't see myself putting a rag over it everytime I play, so it will probably be an on-going issue, but curious if this has happened to anyone else.

Thanks

I had the same problem with the OFC slothead (ding). Pretty certain that the acid in my sweat ate away the gold leaf. Either live with it or send it back to the factory. I sent mine back for several other issues as well. Now when I play out with it and it's hot and I'm sweaty, I'm careful to clean it when I get home (little water or Pledge or Dunlop 65 to keep that area clean)....

I think Moody had this problem on his OFC guitar.

Proper cleaning and wipe down of instrument following use is very important!

But I never do it either.

I think Moody had a similiar issue with his OFC guitar :p

I've never heard of anything like that.
Body chemistry might have something to do with it. I know from personal experience what happens to the strings when you let Temp play your guitar.

You're right Woody.
Moody did have a simular probem.
He even posted something about it somewhere.

Wow!? I thought Gold was a noble element that you couldn't destroy with acid.
Ain't that how they test gold?
If you can get it back up to it's normal luster, I would look for something to polish/protect it with.

I vaguely remember reading another member had that problem... Maybe Moody would know?

Thanks guys....I am glad no one else has had this problem. Especially Moody...he would probably send it back to the factory.

I do wipe down my instrument, but the fine carving is likely not getting wiped in the process.

I will just live with it as it presently is my only AE and I need it a couple of times per week. Besides....it may make someone think I actually use it?????

Jeff, you'll probably notice that you're also carving little grooves in the fretboard as you play it (I am). You can either keep it in pristine condition OR you can play it.

I play mine.

I think Moody has a problem, but is in denial. We should organise an intervention.

If the intervention involves loaning or giving me great guitars then I'm all for it.

Normally, I don't get problems, I give them.....

I have a friend who plays a Taylor who had a simular problem with his sweat, and he uses some kind of sweatband on his arm, just below the elbow. Seems to work for him. I just wipe mine down with Pledge. I think taking a shower once in a while may help also. (;

Wouldn't help.....whenever I go down and start playing, I start sweating.....I must be working at it too hard. Wonder if the mother would send me a bottle of touch up paint and a brush...like they used to with new cars?

If you are thinking of that, you may want to check into doing actual gold leaf. It really isn't that expensive, and it's actually pretty easy. I did gold leafing on signs for quite a while and found it almost as easy as trying to get a good gold paint job.

This has to be the goldurned funniest thread I've read in a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time!

Moody has a problem, but it has nothing to do with gold finish on guitars...he hangs around with some WEIRD folks!

In all seriousness, my guitar is showing the same symptom, but I'm not sure if it is tarnished or just plain wearing off. Nobody can see it when I'm playing, because that's where my arm is.

Like Jeff, I'm just gonna keep playing it, but I'm curious about what sort of paint could be used to touch it up, if I ever get that retentive about it.
