They seem to appear in random places, even in signature lines.

Location: closely held secret | Your browser's been hijacked, Brad. See if you get the same result with a different browser (FireFox, IE, Chrome).
In any case, try running SpyBot - it's free and will clean up a lot of other junk besides. |

Location: Montana | Be very cautious about selecting spyware programs. There are some out there that are scams. They don't do anything but tell you that you have a lot of problems and then they "fix" them but in actuality they are malware and cause problems. So stay with one from a "trusted source". |

Location: closely held secret | Scott, SpyBotS&D has been around for years. It's one of the most trusted and used freeware programs out there. It has a few bugs, but it's not malicious.
However, there are others I've also used, some with better features and some not so much.
Brad, check these reviews and take your pick - they're all safe.

| Brad - in addition to Spybot, I also run Super Antispyware and Spyware Blaster as background processes. What one single product doesn't catch, one of the other ones will. |

Location: closely held secret | Superantispyware is good, too (though I'm always suspicious of software with 'super' in the name). Spyware Blaster is good, but it focuses mainly on IE. On FireFox, Chrome or Safari it's not as effective. |

Get the right tool for the right job. If it's a MAC os, cool, if it's a Microsoft OS, cool, If it's Linux, cool, Chrome too...
The OS "competition" ended a while ago, that's why Apple focuses so much effort on iPods, why Microsoft focuses on Microsoft Live and Google is focusing on Chrome.
Those that argue about Microsoft vs Apple remind me of those who still argue about the North and the South. It's entertaining in small doses, but if you really wanna have fun... next time you attend a reinactment, do us all a favor and use real bullets.

Location: London, UK | I recently upgraded my Trend Micro antivirus software and started seeing website links highlighted in green. Turns out the new AV software had installed add-ins to IE and Firefox to highlight whether links were considered 'safe' or not.
Having found it, I was able to disable the add-in. Not only did it mess with websites' appearance, but it kept causing the browser to hang or die. |

So far I am satisfied with it. I seems to actually stop some infiltrating crap.
Well, at least it 'tells me' that it stopped some crap.
Once I have to pay for it it will be about $60 a year. There are cheaper choices out there...
But I was paying $5 a month for Clearwire Security System and it Sux.
I have 'Clear' which is WiMax, which means it is over-the-air, and possibly vulnerable.
Just thought that I would share that, and maybe fish for input about Norton... :D |

Location: Utah | I always hated Norton AV. It gets deep deep deep into the registry and is nearly impossible to get rid of. Windoze updates can have serious problems because of the tampering. It also can cause or have conflicts with other programs because it gets its hooks into the tiny crevasses of the system.
Perhaps other AV software does the same thing, but we seemed to have more problems with the computers running Norton
On the few PC's we have left, we run free AV programs. They seem to work and we don't have virus problems or the magnitude of other irritating problems. Maybe Norton was too comprehensive, but we are happy with the free stuff now.
On the old Dell laptop that we use for recording, I frequently forget to enable the AV when getting online, and we haven't had any nasties at all on it.
The MAC though leaves me much happier in all categories. |
