Chris Smithers comes to mind. I knew a lot of guys who sounded like this when I played the Village in the late sixties - early seventies. Most of them got no traction. The ones who did . . . well, I don't get it. Hey, a lot of people don't like my voice either.

You know, the one with the high scratchy voice who sang for several bands (AC/DC, Guns and Roses, etc.) and the other guy with the high smooth voice who sang for all of the other bands (Journey, Boston, etc.)

At least he acknowledges it and says that anybody who sings his songs sings them better than him. Jimmy Webb. Also not a great singer (love, absolutely love his songs). John Prine, same. But in their defense, there's something really special about a writer of great songs doing their own material (Dylan and Fogerty not withstanding)...

(That was why it took me so long to play bluegrass with Jack...country twang was definitely an acquired taste for me, and I still don't enjoy it as much as he did.) --Karen

As far as "professional" singers I give credit to anyone who puts it out there. Whether I like or dislike him is just personal preference. There are plenty of singers I dislike, some due to the music/genre rather than the singer himself. On the popular front I'd have to say NEIL YOUNG is an immediate station changer for me. But on the positive side, I always thought TOM JONES had an incredible voice. Like or dislike the music, that dude has some pipes.

Remember when she took voice lessons and released that album with Nelson Riddle? She had a hit off of that album where she actually SANG, but then she ruined it by yelling the last line.
