Joined: November 2007 Posts: 1486 Location: Cincinnati | I'm just posting this even though the guitar is on its way to Iraq. OFC member Michael Winters is stationed in Iraq and was looking for a beater to buy because of the harsh conditions where he's stationed. After talking to several other members we decided that a Composite Acoustics guitar was the best choice. As it ends up Michael will be sharing the guitar with at least four other soldiers. Because of the time it takes to send the guitar to Iraq, we wanted to get it shipped as quickly as possible. Mike, MusicMishka, contacted some people about donations, but we never posted anything about it. SPC. Winters and his brothers will be receiving a new CA OX in the next few weeks. Anyone wanting to make a donation can send it to me. My PayPal account is jwilliams@cohenbrothersinc.com Please mark it as a gift so that there are no fees charged. If you prefer to send a check please PM me for my address. Thanks.

Michael told me that this is a great way to reduce the stress of being stationed in a combat situation but because there was only one guitar in the entire company and the numbers of soldiers who wanted to play it, it was avalible only once a month. Can you imagine not being able to play a guitar but once a month? Jack and I discussed the situation, and he had a line to get the CA. So, with a little help from our friends, Michael and his fellow soldiers will be able to enjoy a very cool, tough guitar during th times they are trying to find a way to relax... He has promised to post pictures as soon as he is able to. For all those folks are doing, it seems the lease we could do.

Besides all of the info he gave to help with the final decision, Michael handled the shipping and customs forms. He also donated accessories including 6 sets of strings. We had ordered an acoustic OX but when Michael discovered that he didn't have one in stock, he shipped the A/E model at no additional cost.

All I wanted to do was buy a beater since I couldn't bring my guitar over and it just snow-balled. This was so very unexpected and as I've told Mike and Jack, I certainly don't deserve something like this. I accept it more on behalf of my buddies who will get to play and enjoy it too. The kind words and support you have all shown is more than a gift enough, we just can't say thank you enough. You make us proud and happy that we have another Family back home

I know some of you have said you prefer to remain anonymous. But if you aren't worried about Michael stalking you when he returns to the states, please forward me your mailing address and I will forward it to Michael. Thanks.

Joined: August 2002 Posts: 8307 Location: Tennessee | Sorry, but this has been gnawing at me and I just have to say it ... No one, and I mean no one, supports getting guitars to servicemen and women serving, more than I do. I personally have sent multiple guitars to Iraq. I have direct first hand knowledge of what it means to them over there. I know the conditions are harsh over there ... from first hand reports. And I've seen with my own eyes what happens to guitars that are in the war zone. So I support the effort to send the guitar. Thanks to all who contributed and thought about helping out a brother. I commend you. Really. But this is not an OFC project. This is not an OFC guitar. If it was an OFC guitar, it would have been a fucking OVATION guitar. Maybe an Adamas. No one will ever convince me that an Adamas with a K-Bar neck would not survive over there as well as a CA or any other brand of guitar. So why send a different brand of guitar on behalf of the OFC? You could have sent any guitar you chose if it was not under the guise of the OFC. And I would have no argument. But you sent it from THE OVATION FAN CLUB. It's like Ford sending their loyal customer a Camaro because they want them to have a nice sporty coupe. SPC Winters is a long time Ovation guy. He has owned a 68 Balladeer since new. He has a custom-made Custom Legend. And when the chance arises to send a guitar that will garner kudos from all, and generate a ton of goodwill and PR, and influence a whole bunch of people ... "The OVATION FAN CLUB" sends a high-end competing brand of guitar. Why? Because an Ovation isn't good enough? And then you all have the balls to call it an OFC guitar? I've been around here a long time. This takes the cake. You've fucking kicked a whole bunch of people in the teeth, especially people like Al, the co-founder of the Ovation FAN Club and the #1 Adamas dealer in the world ... who could have helped out this project instead of THE OFC giving their money to another dealer (no beef Mr. Stone ... you are a class act from what I know ... and thank you for your good deed and generosity). And maybe CWK2 doesn't really give a shit that you dissed him, but I care because he's done so much for everyone and everything here and perhaps deep down he's just a bit taken aback. And a whole bunch of other people here too, including the factory guys who read this board and do so fucking much for us without ever revealing themselves ... they are just happy to know people love their guitars and appreciate their workmanship. We can wax poetic about how indestructible our Ovation guitars are, and how they can go anywhere and do anything while staying in tune, blah blah blah. But if we want to drop a grand on a guitar to send to someone as a special gift? A guitar from the competing brand. Shit. And then tell the whole fucking armed services in Mosul this is from The OVATION FAN CLUB? With fans like these ... well, I just hope we all stand behind our soldiers more than we stand behind the guitars we profess to love and cherish. Like I said before, I really do appreciate the gesture you all made. And the support you are showing for those, including my children and many friends, who are serving in a bad place. I commend all of your for your generosity. Really. Your hearts are definitely in the right place. But you've got your heads up your asses. Support Your Local Sheriff.

Joined: December 2006 Posts: 6268 Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | A non-Ovation guitar was paid for by OFC members and sent to an OFC member. Someone determined that a different brand would be the most suitable and durable guitar to send to Iraq. Their choice and my support... Now picture an Adamas going over... "Oh my gawd, not an Adamas!!! What are ya, crazy?!?". Here we have a win-win situation being flipped over to a lose-lose moan & groan. Man, what's up with that? Don't like the idea, then don't contribute. No one has been kicked in the teeth; up until now! Are we now saying that members can't post other gits in their sig lines? Or on the 'For Sale' forum in fear of kicking/bashing Ovations, Al and Miles? Come on now... I've sent the 'O'raqi to Iraq and aided in getting other gits/equipment over there. Geeze, what's more important; being brand selective or putting 'happiness' into our warriors hands? My bottom line is that I care more for our armed forces than I do about which guitar is selected to send to 'em! BTW, I stuck my head up my azz to make sure my heart was where it's suppose to be! All is well... <spitting teeth>

I was not privy to how it went from that to the CA, but I was PM'd what had been purchased in the end. Wouldn't have crossed my mind to ask for my money back. I can tell you personally, offending or disrespecting anyone, was the furthest thing from my mind.

I gotta admit, I scanned this thread a few times and completely missed the fact that it was NOT an ovation guitar. Not sure what to think. Interesting that it's ok for members, including CWK2 to talk about their Collings, Martins, Gibsons and other guitars and they don't get dissed. Some of these guys don't even own Ovations. And if you read SPC. Winters first post when he was looking for a guitar, you would know that the Mothership told him the Ovation wouldn't survive where he was stationed. So I chose what I thought was the best guitar for the situation. Others from the forum chose to contribute so I thought it would be nice to name it after the forum. If Miles and Al have a problem with it I'm sure they would contact me. I chose to help some soldiers. I owe no apology for what I have done.
