Thank you Al. Maintenance is the key for any computer. Keep it clean and defragged, and just watch where you go on the net.

Hows about some additional info on the computer first. It's a 10+ year old machine with an unknown background after all.
What OS are you trying to load?
Newer OS may require more RAM than the machine currently has.
Need info to give intelligent answers..

I learned something today....

Well, this year... After TWO computers have died on me, I learned to back-up my information.
On Something External... on that other drive don't help when the whole computer croaks.
This computer that I have now has a slot for an HP Pocket Media Drive (320GB)
So now I have Finally learned that when my computer croaks, all my stuff croaks with it.
I guess that this applies to Macs too.

I'm with Fletcher. What operating system are you (trying to) using?

A G4 is fairly old, and won't run newer operating systems. The previous user may have upgraded the operating system beyond the ability of the computer. Finding an older version of the OS and doing a clean install may produce a better result.

Sorry, but that 2nd INTERNAL drive works just fine as a back-up source.
I usually use 2 internal drives set into 4 partitions.
Partition 1 houses the OS
Partition 1 (second drive)houses working files
Partition 2 is the back-up to the working files, and
Partition 2 (second drive) houses a clean (unactivated) system folder.

Unless the processor and BOTH hard drives fail at once, the computer can always be up and running in just a couple of minutes.

OK,
Al,
If you need help formatting your hard drive, installing a new OS or whatever, I'd be glad to help.
If you would like me to send you a pre-formatted drive with the OS installed, I'd be glad to do that for you.
If you would like me to send you another G4 Mac already set up in exchange for yours, just ask.
I'm off.

Well, after all those years being a cop, I can offer some valuable experience tips:

1) A lousy guitar player playing a high end guitar sounds lousy anyway;

2) A top guitar player playing their niece´s Barbie Toy guitar sounds awesome;

3) A man who carries a gun and does not know how to properly use it will get in serious trouble, sooner or later.

4) Computers are machines just like guitars or guns.

Just food for thought. And, as far as I know, Al is an awesome guitar player.

5) You can kill a computer (Mac or Win) with either a guitar or a gun. I'm just saying.
