Joined: January 2006 Posts: 5881 Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Just finished analyzing my gig records for the past 18 months (105 gigs). Having tracked the specific guitars used for each gig, I find that I use a group of four 72% of the time. Not surprising, the guitars include the Adamas 1881, Tak EF75, VXT Custom, and EA-68 in that order. For the remainder of the time, I used a mix of 14 other guitars, just under half of which are O’s or A’s. Individually, none of them come close to the first four in frequency of use. There are 26 other guitars at my disposal that I did not use for any gigs, and rehearsals are excluded. Obviously, my preference leans toward the electric side. Whatever might be compromised in tone with these models, if at all, is more than made up with playability, comfort and versatility. YMMV.

Joined: April 2008 Posts: 1851 Location: Newington, CT | Probably even odds between my OFC II and my 1681-5...However, I DO love my Gretsch electric (6117 re-issue). And, I love my 2007 CE's and my other 2080's! For traveling? My elite shallow-body...got the shallow body for that. Haven't done the gigging, but have had lots and lots of impromptu requests to "play something" when friends are over. That ends pretty quickly, when they realize that I don't really do "songs," but improvised leads around a key structure. What does "YMMV" mean?

It goes where I go if gits are involved and/or I'll be away for a few days. | Around the house, I'll grab whatever is the 'flavor of the day/week'. Don't do gigs... Customer/audience's welfare and safety considerations first, ya know... |

But that just increases the likihood that I'll have the RIGHT tool when the need arises, no matter how seldom. | If ProfBB called me right now and said I needed to stand in for him at tonights gig, I'd grab the Takamine TNV760 CoolTube. Perfect size (OM cutaway) and plays like butter. Audience will assume "this guy knows his shit" just by the looks of the guitar. But here's the kicker, That TNV760 never ever in a million years gets played around the house. I just always gravitate to others for some reason. Recent heavy home rotation is Guild D40, Tak 2009 and AJ's Collings. |

That was the Balladeer, but I haven't got it back from daughter's former boyfriend yet, so it's the Matrix. The theory is I take something I don't have to worry about with temperature fluctuations. | The Country Artist is the office guitar, since it wasn't getting played at home. The OFC, but now the 47RI, was the most likely to get grabbed before any other trips. At home, it's whatever looks lonely and needs playing. For gigs, I'll figure that out when the time comes. My lifetime total, counting family weddings and anniversary parties is about 100 less than Brad's total for the last 18 months. |

I keep a Larrivee LV09 and a Tak TNV340 in alternate tunings. | For lessons: Tak solid body electric. For open mic: either the 08C or the 1687, depending on whether I need the cutaway. Don't have to worry about bumping 'em against a mic stand or somebody sloshing a drink on 'em. |

For bluegrass, whoever bounces up and down most in the case ;) ...usually Jewel, 'cause she's the lightest to tote, although Gertrude gets the nod when we do play out. On the stand to be used at home, Princess (the Parlor.) Anything vaguely electric, Jazzey (the Tornado.) --Karen |

If I'm playing bluegrass, it's usually one of the Morgan Monroe's. Anything else, I grab whatever Ovation or Adamas is within reach. If I'm trying to show up a Taylor fan though, it's usually the Adamas. :D

Joined: April 2006 Posts: 972 Location: PDX I keep three guitars out in stands and they get roughly equal play. | Stanford PSOM-28 moves between DADGAD and open D (DADF#AD). Collings C-10 in standard EADGBE. Lowden S-10C in open G (DGDGBD). I keep my Guild M-20 at the office, but the way things have been going there it hasn't been played much lately. I'll pull out an electric every now and then -- but not often. That leaves two that really just sit in their cases -- i should sell them off and free up some space. Then i can start looking for that round neck Dobro. _____ gh1 |
