People don't like mime? Well, some people don't like yours either. Oh...you were talking about those people who do their act without sound? Never mime...

When a mime gets arrested, do the police bother to tell him he has the right to remain silent?

I don't have a problem with them... as long as they stay in their little glass box.

Never gave them much thought but now that you mention it; yeah, I don't like them much - hate would be too strong a word but I'd just as soon not get anywhere near one.

As a player you aren't a mime as long as there are strings on your guitar.

....and there's really a guitar.

People hate Mimes? I was not aware of that...none of the mimes I have known ever said that to me...or anyone else for that matter.

If you kick a mime in the crotch, will there be a silent scream?

I agree with darkbar ... There's something kinda' sick and creepy about them. I don't know what it is, perhaps the movie Clockwork Orange comes to my mind when I see guys acting goofy with their faces painted white? I think it makes me feel uncomfortable when people won't SAY what they feel instead of acting out.

I WOULD like to know the answer to kotadawg's question though.

Now that was funny, don't care who you are!

I've heard that a mime is a terrible thing to waste but, whatever.

I believe that Americans dislike Mimes because we want the answer NOW and not some poorly gestured game of charades!
They fall somewhere between a Clown after midnight and Boy George.

Occasionally an artist like Red Skelton, Jackie Gleason or Carol Burnett could pull off a mimed out and endearing skit but that was then...

In France there seem to be a lot of mimes. Not so much in the states. I don't think it's hatred; where I live it's more like indifference to the art of mime, though in NYC you'll occassional see street mime that's entertaining, but if you look in their eyes they seem more crazy than your normal busker.

I drown them out by putting a blank cassette in my boom box and turning the volume all the way up.

Can't say I "hate" them, but for me a little mimery goes a long way.

great mime joke:
One day, a mime is visiting the zoo and attempts to earn some money as a street performer. As soon as he starts to draw a crowd, the zoo keeper grabs him and drags him into his office.
The zoo keeper explains to the mime that the zoo's most popular attraction, a gorilla, died suddenly and the keeper fears that attendance at the zoo will fall off.
He offers the mime a job to dress up as the gorilla until they can get another one. The mime accepts the offer.
So, the next morning, before the crowd arrives, the mime puts on the gorilla suit and enters the cage.
He discovers that it's a great job. He can sleep all he wants, play and make fun of people, and he draws larger crowds than he ever did as a mime on the street.
However, eventually the crowd tires of him, and he tires of just swinging on auto tires. He notices that the people are paying more attention to the lion in the next cage. Not wanting to lose the attention of his audience, he climbs to the top of his cage, crawls across a partition, and dangles from the top of the lion's cage.
Of course, this makes the lion furious, but the crowd loves it. At the end of the day the zoo keeper comes and gives the mime a raise for being such a good attraction.
Well, this goes on for some time, the mime keeps taunting the lion, the crowd grows larger, and his salary keeps going up.
Then, one day, when he is dangling over the top of the lion's cage, he slips and falls. The mime is terrified.
The lion raises himself up and prepares to pounce.
The mime is so scared that he begins to run around the cage with the lion in hot pursuit.
Finally, the mime starts screaming, "Help! Help me!"
The lion is quick and pounces. The mime soon finds him flat on his back looking up at the angry lion. The lion says, "Shut up, you idiot, or we'll both lose our jobs!"

The street mimes I've encountered always seem to want to get in my face, to invoke a personal reaction, rather than just put on a performance I can watch and potentially enjoy.

I'm sure it's fun for them; I mean I'm a 6'5" 220lb. logger who, no doubt, looks really out of place in the city. I can understand that and laugh at how the interaction must look for other spectators, but only for a bit.

The problem is they always seem to push it too far and I get ticked off. The more I react, the more they push and there ends of being clown white all over the street...
