I just got my Ovation last week but I could sell it to a very willing buyer and not lose any money on it. I can't play the Taylor before hand, its out of town and would have to be shipped My OV is a new 2078lx elite deep contour. Not sure if I should do this or not. I've never played a Taylor

But I do know that you can probably buy TWO really nice Ovations for $1600. Or One Really Nice Adamas. If you want to know what the general consensus might be, do a forum search for "Taylor. :p

I grabbed mine from the us for about 800 us new with case. Here in my town, your not getting an elite ovation for under 2 grand Canadian....that's why I never bought one here. A Taylor, above 3 if not 4.

As a matter-of-fact, we all here at the OFC are actually secretly planning to sell all our Ovation guitars and buy up as many Taylors as we can. We are absolutely sold on Taylor guitars. Oh ... and Elvis is actually alive and well, living secretly in isolation as a monk in Japan.

The Taylor 416 LTD is a fine guitar. Spruce top with Tazmanian Blackwood back and sides. Very well put together and great sound.

For the same money, Ovations are a better investment and a superior instrument. If you get into the 3 grand plus territory there are some nice Taylors to be found and there is that one cheap one (baby) that Dave raves about.

But make sure you wear an asbestos suit, 'cause the flames are guaranteed to give you third degree burns. The fan-boy attitude is worse than Apple. There's no doubt Taylor guitars have high build quality, fit and finish. I own as many all-wood guitars as I do Ovations/Adamii, but none of them Taylor. Part of the reason is that I have yet to play a Taylor that speaks to me. Part of it is the holier-than-thou attitude of many Taylor owners. And part of it is that I can have a superior-sounding guitar to my ears with just as good build quality and materials for a lot le$$. I don't know anybody here who genuinely looks down on anyone else's choice(s) of guitar brand(s) (well, maybe an Esteban). Since we like Ovations, we're already a couple of standard deviations away from the mean. But that just means we appreciate variety. Not so for the Taylor fans-boys I've met.

I have had and still have a few Taylor guitars that I feel are excellent instruments, yet I have played a few that were, as someone else said, turds. I still like Ovations too. Totally different sound, yet both are pleasurable to me. I agree on the Esteban. What a pos.

That's a can't miss from an investment standpoint because for whatever reason, many many people out there treasure Taylors and keep their value high. So do it, and then save another $600-800 and get a killer Ovation that will 9 times out of 10 blow the Taylor away. You'll avoid the coulda woulda shoulda in the back of your mind.

Catch people when they are half-asleep! I have bought two really NICE $66 wood boxes that I have lent-out. I do not know that an Esteban would survive the abuse... And I don't think that I could survive the abuse if I actually lent an Esteban to somebody.

Joined: March 2002 Posts: 15664 Location: SoCal | Guy at church who plays with us has a Taylor 314. Ok guitar but sounds thin acoustically and plugged in. He's having a problem with the electronics and borrowed a Taylor 814 from a friend. Nice guitar. Retails for $4k. It's a nice $1500 guitar. Looks great, sounds decent. You pay a lot with Taylors for what you get. If it's worth it, then buy one. They are not good deals as far as I'm concerned. Larivee's are much better. And if you want to spend $4k, buy a Collings, Santa Cruz, Froggy Bottom, etc. There are much better guitars out there for that kind of money. My 87C, for $1200 or thereabouts is a much better guitar than the 814. But if you want a Taylor, go ahead and get one. Other Taylor owners will love you and tell you how brilliant you are. And by the way, Usual Suspects is being sarcastic and playing with you.......
