I do like a lot of his stuff but I do think he got lucky. And being over the top and outspoken never hurts a rock star.

Luck?
Look past the weird and listen to him play.
I could go on about Frank and all the great musicians he had thru the years, but like Damon said,....to each his own.
He is one of the reasons I picked up my first guitar.

Frank was a great musician. Kinky, quirky, maybe a little mad, but still great. I agree, a lot of his stuff wasn't even worth listening to, but he did assemble a bunch of very good musicians and compose some very intricate music.

Most the guys playing with him were better than him and I never really thought he was that much of a guitar player, good but not at all great.

Of course it's subjective right but I personally think he was he an extremely talented composer, musician, band leader and guitarist.

And yes he liked to surround himself with people that could play his difficult music but also who had a sense of humour.

He is *sadly* missed.

Frank taught himself how to write orchestral scores. I think that is pretty great on its own merit.

Did you ever really listen to Frank play guitar? seriously. Get some of the shut up and play your guitar series. Frank was a smokin guitar player. His style was very blues based and entrenched in the sixties guitar sound but he did it VERY WELL.

He was master guitarist, happily playing fast groups of 5 and 7s, odd meters and could improvise in a truely awe inspiring and creative way. He had a unique tone and style, not just another GIT clone.

Interestingly he never considered himself as guitarist, more a composer that played the guitar.

FZ was one of the few people I'd call a genius. Not everybody gets a genius, and that's OK. It's not about mass consumption it's about artistic vision.

Zappa was unique, smart, talented, creative, he hired great musicians and put out tons of music. Was all of it great? Not to me, but it was unmistakably Frank Zappa.

No matter what kind of mood I'm in, Frank had something to fit it. His orchestral music is still some of my favorite music in the world, I get a kick out of the Joe's Garage type stuff, his sense of satire and social commentary is (I think) ingenius, and oh, by the way, can you tell I'm a big fan?

Stevie's spanking is like a grudge match between Vai and Dweezil. Kick but stuff! (And done on Carvin X100B!)

"Its not that he requires grooming! Guys with light blue hair never do!"

Same album I was mentioning above. Great stuff!

I personally love his music. In my youth, when he was very popular (underground in Canada) it seemed the more I listened to it the more I enjoyed it, as opposed to bands I got tired of repetitive listening. However I think his role in anti-censorship was as, or more important than his music.

You're using 3 guitars for gigs now? What's the extra one? Nylon string?

6, 12, & AdamasLongNeck (now sporting the MattSmith BridgeCable & tuned down to B . . . oofah!).

I sometimes use 4, but the Nylon is at the Factory.

Back to the Topic:
I find Zappa t'be Brilliant, but can only take it in small doses . . . after that, he starts t'become superfluous . . .

I wish I was able t'see that show that his son did of his father's music, but I missed out (you caught that, didn't you Al??)

He's a pretty accomplished guitarist, himself.
It's a pity that he acts like a dick . . .

At least my 2 will have company.

As for Zappa ... I've tried to get into him, but I just never "got it". I will give him lots of credit for being different, and making a very good career of it. Not too many artists do that anymore.
