With my old amp I could plug a music player into one of the inputs, plug the bass into the other input, plug in some headphones and I could practice away in the same room as SWMBO while she watches TV.

This worked OK, but it was a bit cumbersome.

I could use my laptop, but that's cumbersome too.

Is there a product out there that does something similar, or does anyone have an alternative solution?

I use a Vox ac30 head phone amp, it has an input for an outside audio source. It works well and the cost is around 40 bucks

Glenn C called it. The Vox AC10 is probably exactly what you're looking for.

Ditto on the PX4. The emulations are very very good, with some of the effects being true stereo (reverb, echo, chorus). Get the PX4D if you can, it has twice the memory. Be sure to get the strap clip if you buy a used one, it is an invaluable part of the mobile system.

Well, there were only 3 that counted.... two for hockey and one for drinking a 'Canadian Pint' during The Whistler Stroll. (don't know if that got much International play)

Luvin' loud?
Nickelback, Bachman Turner Overweight, Neil Young & Crazy Horse .... we bin loud a long time. Just quiet about it.

Things're getting quiet & respectful again now. After all, the Special Olympics start in a couple days. (normally that would be a provincial election.....)

+2 I bought one of those a while ago, and it's a great little unit.

If you're talking about a guitar not a bass, the Yamaha silent string is very nice. Plug in an MP3 player and jam away.

For bass guitar, I'd go with the Korg Pandora.
If you're looking for a self-contained 6-string solution, I've had one of these since they came out almost a decade ago.
It works great with WorkshopLive on my laptop when hanging out in the family room.
It also breaks down into a gigbag for travel and comes in a steel version.

Yamaha also showed this deluxe "concert nylon" version, but I was not able to find one for sale in the States.

Say, Noah, I love the deluxe version. Looks like it comes with nice maple binding, but it begs the question of necessity. Same goes for the pickguard. Sure wouldn't want to leave pic scratches in anything.

Yup, I've got the steel string version and the top has opened up nicely. ;)

Ebony fretboard, wider neck, wood wings (instead of composite)... yep, that deluxe version is the one to find.

The quality on mine is great. It lives in the family room with my Multiac.

TJ, Have you tried a ToneRite on yours?
When I'm not playing mine, I keep a ToneRite on it. The results have been amazing! :p

I really like the Vox amplug option - especially when they make 5 different flavours, one of which being for bass. I ordered one today.

Some of those other units seem far to complex for my few remaining brain cells.

Thanks for all the input gang.

These Yamaha's are great. I have been using mine with an ipod, but with a "Y" connector. Perfect for quiet practice.

I'm not too sure what I'm actually looking at there, Hector.

I can see the iPod and the 'Y' connector - is the 'sylent' the actual see-thru guitar?

Given the option of buying a $40 headphone amp or forking out for ANOTHER guitar - I'll go the cheap option every time.

Just out of curiousity though, how's is work? How does the 'Y' connector fit into the chain of events?

edit; I've just googled the Yamaha Silent - doesn't look like they do a bass version. I still can't see why you need the 'Y' connector as the guitar has an aux in, which I would assume takes the MP3/cd player?
