Location: Utah | Out of curiosity, what effects do you consider essential? What do you have and what would you like to have?
For acoustic, I don't have anything other than what's on the amp: reverb, chorus, delay. For electric I have a digitech tube distortion pedal.
One essential for us is the ART Tube MP Studio single tube 12AX7 preamp. It mostly gets used as a preamp for piezo'd violin or mandolin. For about $25 it is a steal. It can run clean all the way to heavy distortion. I like the compression on the mando, and a tad of distortion on the mando is kind of fun too. I like how it warms up a mic, but we don't get much use that way.
What I would really like to have on the floor are a compressor, reverb, and clean boost. Plus the distortion pedal that I already have. That's it. There are a lot of fun toys with cool effects, but they honestly wouldn't be more than just something to goof off with.

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I’m not sure these set-ups are ideal, but its what I’m using at this time . . .
Current acoustic pedal board:
Fender PT-100 tuner
Jacques tube overdrive (believe it or not, we have some numbers that require distortion)
Keeley Blues Driver (used primarily as a boost)
Zoom A2.1u (with about five customized presets essentially with different amounts of reverb and chorus dialed in)
When called for, I add a Dunlop 535Q Wah in front of the board, and for instrumental solo gigs, I add a Boss RC-20XL loop station at the end of the chain. I also have a Trace Elliot SMX dual compressor (thanks for the tip, Matt) en route that will be installed after the tuner.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | As an electric player mostly I have gone round and round on effects. I have had everything from a full pedal board with Chorus, Boost, Distortion, Octave, Wah, Sustain, Delay and Reverb to just using a Rockman into to amps, to using Rockman Modules and intermixed with assorted programmable rack units over the years too.
At the end of the day (or end of many years) it simplified..
1. If I'm going to play other peoples music, a rackmount digital effects unit is nice, or a modeling amp with effects.
2. If I'm playing only or mostly my music, I can get away with Clean or Distortion from the amp as well as a touch of reverb from the amp, although for some tunes, delay is nice. I used to use Chorus, but then learned the true wonder that is the 10-String... which was really the sound I was originally shooting for, I just didn't know it at the time.
For Acoustic, if a good reverb is available, a slight touch is nice. I try to have any acoustic sound like an acoustic, not like a clean electric. |

With the acoustic, I used to use a touch of chorus and or reverb, but I'm really liking the total zero effect sound coming outta that old Standel for the moment. |

FX on amp.
mainly reverb , depending..
The 1618 ( 12 stringer ) is usually plugged into a Yamaha RA -50 ( mini -leslie )
All in all , as few FX as possible , most Important is a Good , Real Good Amplifier/loudspeaker .

For the rockabilly stuff, I've got a Carl Martin Delayla (works a lot like an old tape echo - takes out a lot of harsh highs, warms everything up analogue style, fantastic pedal). Simple setup there:- Guitar - Tuner - Delayla - Amp.
My main pedal board for gigs where I need stuff is slightly more complicated - may be upgrading the multi-fx to standalone units I think when bonuses, mortgage, and girlfriend allow...
Carl Martin 2-wah
Carl Martin Quattro (for compression, 2-channel distortion, chorus, echo)
Carl Martin Boost (like an MXR micro amp)
I don't really need anything else...
Acoustic wise, I usually just plug straight into the PA - bit of reverb for atmosphere if they have it. but no complaints if not. I'm looking at getting a Carl Martin Parametric EQ, which will act as a DI, but I've never used anything like it before.
Love what these guys do - all designed to work through tube amps. Have a gander at their stuff on www.carlmartin.com if you fancy. I'm not connected to them or anything, just love their little boxes.

| Well my electric days have been over for some time. And I am still trying out effects all the time. I hate the new stuff as it takes me days to figure out how to set the presets and unless I use the electrics all the time (and I don't) I forget what I am doing anyway. Always worried the batteries are going to crap out and all my settings will be lost. I am not sure if could find them again if they did. I don't remember what I did in the first place after a day or two.
So I have a bunch of pedals that work but I am just not very happy with. I do like my old Morley Volume/Whaa Pedal I got from Noah, if I remember right, through a trade.
My Acoustics I have just been running through an acoustic amp or if I have access to a board I go that way.
I was still running the OP24 electronics christ these are 30 years old and they still sound good through the adamas's. Hopfully I will have my customs done for a couple of Gig's comming up to kick off the summer season. Can't wait to hear what the Studio electronics sound like.
I guess I need to go to someone and ask for help with my electric effects set up. It is just not very user friendly and it is lacking in the sounds department as well.

For electric? I run it through a Boss GT8, modeling a pair of Fender Twins and an Ibanez Tube-Screamer. Mix in a 10ms delay, and shoot it straight to the PA. Rock on... |

Oops forgot compression!
Then I just need a phaser.
And that sample and hold effect is prety cool.
Bit of pitch detuning.
Always need some wah-wah.
Add the distortion.
Damn! Cannot hear the guitar anymore :-( |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Just reworked the pedal boards. Still dialing in a number of presets on the Zoom for acoustic stuff, but these should hold me for awhile. Both fit snuggly in 18"x13" (approx) aluminum carrying cases readily available from a number of retailers.
