I have a Glen Campbell Ovation 12-string I'm trying to put a value to. Model # 1118 Serial # 261461.
Can anyone help me determine a fair SELL price for this? I've seen it's original BUY price, but want to have a realistic idea of the market and demand for this type of guitar. Any info will help. Thank you! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | On the positive side, that's a great 12-string in terms of sound and playability and definately has some "mojo".
On the negative side, many players don't care for a 12 fret non-cutaway (maybe less of an issue on a 12 string) and being acoustic-only will limit your market somewhat. The other over-riding factor is that the general market for used guitars right now is not great for a seller. Sure there are exceptions.
I'm not the price police, but maybe I would ask $500. for it and see what happens. High quality photos and throw in free shipping will help.

Please don't take Flysig's offer seriously.
As a general rule I think we hesitate to place a dollar amount on an instrument. Searching recent completed e-bay sales might be a better barometer than us fan-boys.
But what we don't want to do is scare you away after an unanswered post. So, IMHO, I'd say a $500 to $600 range would be right. Caution... your milage may vary. |

Location: Gainesville, Va. | **Dave** Thank you. I was looking for an honest answer. I've loved this guitar for years, and knew what the "book" value was,.. but didn't know what it would bring in terms of re-sale.
I was thinking of listing at or just under your suggestion, so that just re-assures me. If I decide to sell, I will definately list it here first, with the proper pictures of course. Thanks again!

Location: Boise, Idaho | I still have seller's remorse from a guitar I sold in 1977. I've avoided it since. I had buyer's remorse a couple years ago, but cured it by trading for a better guitar. Iffy is right. GAS is a much better illness than seller's remorse. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | Better to start lower and let the market decide. Many buyers will pay 600 in a bidding frenzy but would never start their bidding at $600 cause they want to THINK they are gonna get it for less.
If you start the auction at $400 and it goes up higher, then you get a nice little sellers surprise.
If you start at $600 and don't get any bids, you are bummed. Just my .02 worth. |

Location: Utah | GC, I hope you didn't take my post too seriously. Back in the winter of '77/78 I wanted to buy an Ovation 12 string, but couldn't afford it by about $50. So I ended up with an Alvarez Yairi that I still have. It sounds great, and has some memories, but every once in a while I consider trading it in for a classic Ovation 12 string.
Anyhow, right now it is a buyer's market for used guitars. Lots of great deals out there, and I wish I had some spare $ to spend!
I'm sure your guitar is "worth" more than the market will bring, in terms of sound, quality, and value per dollar. If there is a way to hang on to it, that is what I would do, in hopes that the market swings up.
The government rebate checks might make a little surge in prices, who knows.
If it were me, I'd set a price towards the high end if it really is in the condition you stated, and offer it up here on this forum first. This is the most concentrated bunch of potential customers. You would avoid eBay fees and hassles with buyers. If it doesn't go here within maybe 10 days, put it on the bay. That's what I would do. |

Location: Portland, OR | 22 years ago I paid $300 for an 1118. Over the years I needed to have it wired. Factory did that for peanuts. It still has the strongest sound I have. Distinctive. Keep it. Mines got a few dings and a factory repaired crack. I wouldn't sell it for $500. Not unless the wolves were at the door. |
