Someone said that they had recorded Matt's clinics at Amelia and was gonna put a DVD together for general consumption.

Is it finished?

Have you worked out a price?

OK, here's the deal: Tim and I have talked to Matt. He has asked us to make only the actual clinic video available to THOSE WHO WERE IN ATTENDANCE ONLY! As for his performances, we have to make a copy of them all and send it to Matt for his approval or disapproval.
Since only those who were in attendance paid for the clinic, he thinks it only fair to keep it among those circa 25 persons.
So once again, only those who were in attendance can receive copies of the clinic. Tim is still working on them. We should know something soon as to when they will be available. Matt is on tour and it may be awhile before the performances get copied. Now that does not mean the few performances where Matt did not play or the songwriter night.
Sorry to those who did not go, but hopefully this will happen again: if not, well as they say: "YA SHUDABEENTHERE"!

I'd like to explain my reasoning... As a teacher, I give everything to the lesson... all who attended Amelia paid money to be there... I ALWAYS allow my students to record the lesson... this allows me to teach much more information... "sipping from the fire hose". However, this is a privilege of the student... This is a big part of how I earn a living, and as such, the week shared by all of us was a beautiful unique experience. Most of this information is available through my Chop Shop book and My Chop Shop WorkshipeLive.com lessons... The DVD's go to the Amelia attendees only...for the cost of duplication to Tim... I am honored to be a part of a truly special brother/sisterhood...

I recall a thread where the vids were to be offered to the OFC membership, price to be determined. If I recall correctly I was either the first or second on 'dibs'.

It wouldn't bother me to have the price, based on the number ordered, to cover the attendees FREE copies since they paid to be there.

If anyone would be denied income due to the offer to the general membership and has 'rights', then let that individual sell the media.

Or

Use the DVD as a fund raising endeavor for the OFC and any 'income denied' individual(s).

This site was used, at least in part, to propose, plan and advertise the event; this same site that is $upported by member$ that could not attend, regardless of the reason.

To be honest I'm quite disappointed in the restriction. It smacks of a 'Country Club' mentality that I have not associated with the OFC and it's membership.

Do you realise that this is no different to asking anyone who owns a copy of Matt's ChopShop book to photocopy it for you?

Mr Smith makes a proportion of his living from teaching at events such as Amelia. Many of these events are industry-sponsored, are much bigger and have a higher profile and I'm pretty sure pay a lot better, so we were all privelleged to be in such a small group "sipping from the fire hose" Some of the material Matt delivered can be purchased from his books, though as good they are cannot compete with him delivering it personally. You need to stop whining about his personal and highly refined teaching techniques being restricted to non-attendees, and get to one of his ChopShops, or buy his books.

When you are a professional of any kind you sell a product, and restrictring the bootlegging or unauthorised use of that product is not in any way a "county club" mentality. So, Turn up to a ChopShop, or buy a book and quit whining.

I've already put in my "deposit" for next years event. No way will I miss out on another chop shop that was so much fun and inexpensive considering what I derived from the experience.

I am already saving for the trip and can't wait for next year!

Usually when I give classes, each student makes their own recording, this was done as a service to the class... Let's settle down ... this was all about friendship , fun and music.. This was my decision and in no way reflects OFC official policy or opinion...

Iffy, I understand your feelings (of not being able to attend), however, Matt being the professional, and a great one at that, does derive his income from his Chop Shops and professional engagements. If his events were published freely then he would possibly lose an opportunity to make a living.

Granted, I was LUCKY enough to be able to attend this function, yet this was the first NATIONAL function that I gave attended. The comradarie that was afforded to me, was because I am a member of this board, not a country club. I will always be grateful to the attendees for making me feel like I was amongst brothers and friends.

I am not a professional musicain, for that matter, a musician at all, but I do respect the professional musicians right to make a living.

I hope that each member here has a chance to attend one of Matt's clinics and learn from one of the best (as well as meet one hell of a guy personally).

Sign up EARLY for the next event that Matt will be teaching, it will be well worth the time and $$$.

Just my usual 2 cents.

Iffy lives in Florida.

He possibly could have attended the chop shop for the price of a tank of gas and the initial fee.

Certainly much cheaper than the majority of us who flew in at great expense. I saved and planned for over 4 months to make it happen.

Now that most members know what a kickass time was had by everyone, it would behoove them to start planning for the next gathering.

Matt,
I truly appreciate that you make your living professionally through music and teaching. In fact I provided a couple of suggestions that might have allowed non-attendees to acquire the DVD and you still be compensated, as well you should be.

Thanx for a cogent and worthwhile post.

BTW, no where in my post did I imply the DVD be freely published. I suggested that the attendees get theirs free, paid for by the sales to the general membership.

Iffy, when I said "freely", I was only respecting Matt's right to revenues derived by his profession. I do understand what you meant, but Matt already has many avenues that we all can learn from.

I recently joined workshoplive.com as a result of Matt's suggestion in Amelia. Matt has lessons on this websight, as well as many other talented teachers. I have learned greatly from this site.

In Amelia, I was a little lost (due to my limited skills, not Matt's teaching abilities)), but Matt made it a point to encourage me often, much to the chagrin of the talented participants there (he did encourage equally, pro that he is). What I really came away with was, a re-energized goal to learn to play the guitar, and EVERYONE there found so much to go home with, even seasoned pros. It had alot to do with the WHOLE experience, not just what was taped.

I know your heart is in the right place, (wanting everyone to share in the experience of a Matt Smith Clinic) and respect that. I also regret that you weren't able to attend. Next time, sign up early and often and I hope to see you there, along with Matt.

In the meantime, try workshoplive.com, or order one of Matt's great books.

As a side note: there have been, and hopefully will be, a few GETTAGATHERS in the 'ol FLA. We ain't Matt, but we are alot O' fun. Hope ya can join us next time!

Some of us will never be able to attend one of these gigs. If I was on the US mainland, I would have attended a dozen gatherings by now.

This taped event has a different flavour to anything Matt's already got for sale - it's got OFC members in it. Although I've never met any of the attendees, I feel I know them to some small degree and crazy as it sounds, consider some of them friends.

I would love to have an opportunity to travel to the US to attend the factory tour, but I'm a teacher and even if I had the money...

I appreciate and understand Matt's standpoint, but until he arranges a tour that includes Brisbane, I'm out.

So, Matt, why not make some money out of it? Why not charge a fair price for the DVD to non attendees and reimburse Matt for his expertise - everybody's happy.

I bought the last 2 tour DVDs and the 2nd "Members night out" CD - for us foreigners without means to regularly travel to the US, it's our only way of 'attending' these functions.

It would be another Matt Smith product, exclusive to OFC members.

Just a thought.

If MusicMishka mis spoke or spoke out of line, or did not totally have the details worked out with Matt before he offered the dvd it is on him NOT with Matt.

When I have to give people a vacation form the ofc I often give them one instruction and that is "think" before you post.

I have known Matt Smith for about 10 years. He is one of the most generous people I know with his time, talent and knowledge. If you have attended a Matt Smith clinic or workshop you know what I mean. You get the WHOLE package. Matt is there at breakfast giving Brad pointers on how to sell a song, he is there at lunch talking about improvisation, at dinner...well you get the picture. It is what Matt likes to call "the hang". which he considers a part of the overall event. Matt is just as at home jamming with a group of guys in the bed in a motel room at 3 am working out chord changes as he is on the stage.

Matt has cd's, workshop live, national guitar workshop, chop shop and private lessons available. Believe me buy the chop shop book, there is a lifetime of material in it. Just the fact that he allows students to tape or video tape a lesson is amazing alone.

I have never seen matt be anything but positive to the most basic of player to the most advanced. You feel good when you are finished with Matt's clinic even if you know you suck. You just feel good about it. I know of two individuals he encouraged to become teachers and one even got his book published with matt's help.

A few years ago when I was stressed out over the whole Open House event Matt and I hung out and he said to me "think about it Al, without you none of this would happen" and well no one ever said that to me before and it meant much to me. At amelia, Matt knew that I was still bummed over the untimely death of my friend and blues buddy John "Nightwolf" Nelson and he said to me, "you"re an artist you have to get out and do this and make it happen".

OK maybe I am not an artist but it sure made me fell like one when Matt said it. When I got home from amelia, the first e mail I sent was to matt and it was one word "thanks".

I am just appalled that this discussion is even on the message board. Sometimes you can't get everything that you want and it is OK. Matt is so unselfish with his time and talent that is is not even funny.

Utilize the part of the board to ask matt questions. He will respond. Take advantage of that resourse.

I think this topic is done. put a fork in it

I haven't read through this whole thread yet - so this may have been covered.

I did pay for my spot at the seminar and I would hope that that would at least give me the opportunity to purchase a copy. It's hard enough having missed it (completely unavoidable!) and having to see what I missed on a daily basis.

I apologize for prolonging the thread Al, but I think it's fair.

Here's my fork:

To those that may have been offended by my 'Country Club' comment, I apologize for my choice of words. I should of expressed my disappointment in a more diplomatic manner.

Rest assured that I WILL sign up for the 2009 Florida gathering as soon as it is announced! :D
