I went to her house and saw a brown case and I got more interested. Opened and saw a slothead. Even better. It's not mint but also not bad either. It has a surface crack that I can live with and the action is good. Here is the problem. She had it listed for $300.00,so I offered her $250.00. She looked at me like I had 3 heads and said "I want at least $500.00". I told her it was listed for $300.00 and she did not believe me. So she went to her ad and saw she had listed it for $300.00. I told her I would give her $300.00 like the ad stated and she said no. I told her to have a nice day and left. I was just out of her driveway and she called me on the phone and said she would sell it for $300.00. I will post pics later. The wife does not know about this one yet. lol

Same goes for the seller in exercising a willingness to allow a prospective buyer to walk. Sounds like the seller broke first. Congrats.

Strum it hard and we'll hear it all the way down here in Texas… ;) I was looking for one in that price range for a while last year before I found mine. Based on that search, and in that condition, (particularly with a crack,) I think you paid her a fair price. In our little universe here on the OFC, you got a stellar guitar for an excellent price, but, in the real world, you did not "steal" it from her by any means… it was fair for both parties… (that's my 2¢ "lady in Michigan" in case you're reading this with seller's remorse…) ;) …she probably was unsure what it was worth and you showed enough enthusiastic interest to make her wonder if she had under-priced it, so she asked for more… Now, all that said, the 1115 is a better-sounding and smoother-playing 12 string than anything you'd find anywhere, even at several times what you paid for it, so, in that sense, you really got a spectacular deal. Is it acoustic only or A/E? Have you checked the serial number to see what year it is yet? Congrats, enjoy it…

(not that there's anything wrong with that…)

I couldn't stand it, so I searched the forum for ideas and found a good suggestion… … the cigarette smell is history… … now it smells like Ozium® instead… ;)

The stink was an unpleasant surprise, (although it did alert me when the UPS truck was approaching my neighborhood…) ;) I didn't know if I would ever get rid of the stench, but it's such a great guitar, I HAD to keep it… First I tried simply airing it out for a long time… but that just stunk up the house. I ultimately sprayed copious Ozium on a small piece of cloth and set it (on a piece of plastic to avoid direct contact with any guitar surface) inside the (horizontal) guitar. I left it out that way for 24 hours. Then I repeated the treatment with the guitar inside the closed (and previously treated) case. It's remarkable how well it worked. I'm sold on Ozium, it does leave it's own lingering (and odd) "fragrance" but that dissipates eventually and there is now barely any trace of the odor left in the guitar or the case. (My playing still stinks, though…) ;) Ovation has always made (and still makes) superb 12-string guitars… enjoy your new "Pacer." ;)

I used it many times when my boys were young and were sick. All 3 came down with viruses and took turns throwing up every where but the sink, garbage can or toilet. That time it was so bad that I sat the kids down in one room and left a empty storage container in the middle of the room and told them to go for it. I recently bought a 12 exposure film magazine for my Hasselblad and knew right away the guy was a smoker. It reeked and he never mentioned he was a smoker. I did 3 treatments with the vinegar and the smell is totally gone. You will not even smell the vinegar afterwards.

I felt around while I had the strings off and it has a wire running to each side of the bridge. At the time I was busy trying to figure out how to restring a slothead and didn't explore any more. Now I wish I did. I plugged my turner into the jack today and it does not seem to work. The seller said no work was done on the guitar(We know sellers don't always tell us everything) and she is not sure what that is. Looks like someone tried to make it A/E. Just not sure what kind it might be. I didn't find a battery holder. Weird!

Joined: December 2008 Posts: 1453 Location: Texas | Phil, If I had three kids simultaneously in the condition you described, I'd be tempted to drink the vinegar… ;) Vinegar sounds like practical advice for many non-porous surfaces, but is it a good idea to rub vinegar (or anything else) on the inside of a wood-top Ovation? I would speculate that the bare wood of the underside of the top and the braces are the most porous surfaces anywhere on the guitar, and therefore that's probably where most of the smoke was absorbed. I would be reluctant to rub vinegar (or anything else) directly on raw wood inside any guitar. Same thing with the inside of the case, is it a good idea to rub vinegar on cloth? I don't know the answer, but I'd rather avoid it, unless I ran out of other ideas… Baking soda is also good for absorbing odors, but I was afraid that it might also absorb moisture and potentially dry out the wood, so I went looking for an alternative, and Ozium was mentioned in an old thread somewhere… (Of course, Ozium might actually BE mostly vinegar, for all I know.) ;) I don't know HOW it works, but I'm delighted at how WELL it worked, in my case (pun intended.)

They were on for so many years and it looked like they were tied in a know rather than just looped.
