1537 Sunburst STEAL ...

I tried to get a last minute bid in on this and just missed it. My bid was a lot higher than the winners, but my wife distracted me from bidding while she was arguing with me over it. ):

You guys should remember that Brad and I can check this stuff out locally if given a heads up.

Gravity music is a nice shop and I have dropped in periodically and bought stuff from them. Probably no more than 10-15 miles max from either of our houses.

Wish I had noticed this one.....not that I would have bought it but I could have checked it out for those interested.

Vince, sorry to hear that. Unfortunately they don't ship internationally but I know the one who won the auction. More info soon ...

This is an outlet store for second-hand gear. While they do have their retail store open to the public, it is by no means customer friendly. No counters, nothing on the walls, no signage and no prices posted, no sales staff, just old gear spread out all over the floor. They specialize in on-line sales and you have to know what you're looking for if you actually visit their store. While attending a liquidation auction for a another closed music store, I ended up bidding against Gravity Music store's owner for a beautiful Breedlove neon sign. I realized what was happending and stopped bidding about $100 short of where I was willing to go. He got the sign. Then I called him the next day and offered him $20 more than he paid for it, which he quickly accepted. We both won.

Yes, but was it higher than the winning bidders MAXIMUM bid? I think the max bid on this one was plenty high. Just a hunch ...

In a minor aside, I'm SERIOUSLY happy someone managed to steal this one. I planned on bidding when I got home from traveling for the holiday, but got delayed several hours and missed it by minutes. Otherwise, you would soon be looking at pics of it twinning up beside my burst 1538.

Still, I'm pleased (and slightly surprised) that no one put up a "PSA" about it as it gave someone an opportunity to get it at a bargain price. Which at some time in the distant past, was just about the WHOLE FUN of lurking around eBay!

Yeah, yeah...I'm well aware that some dealer may have snagged it just to flip it, but it is also possible that whoever got it is doing cartwheels about finally snagging his/her dream guitar when they thought they would never be able to afford one. (That's how I feel about my D-42.)

Shopping on eBay has gotten less and less fun for the last couple of years because guitar forums "out" any potential bargain, and the sharks are drawn to it like an industrial-sized chum bucket.

So, congratulations to the new owner. I hope you get years of pleasant use from it. You got it for less than half its actual worth, so play it with a knowing smirk and most definitely, ENJOY!

Wonder why the seller would not ship internationally? Cuts him off from a pretty big market of Ovation fans that are willing to pay good money for something special like this that isn't readily available in Europe and certaily not at a stupid low USD price like this ...

Hope the guitar comes to a US inspection station so somebody can check it out good before sending it overseas. For this low of a purchase price, even if it took a small investment in fix-ups, and some extra money for overseas shipment it would still be a hell of a bargin for a European buyer.

Agree, it will be a good buy.

I was told by mothership that a 1537 natural finish will arrive tomorrow (refinish top and new electronics, setup, etc, etc). :)

Probably less hassle and/or previous bad experiences. Plus, who besides the OFC knows the pains our overseas members have to go through to adopt one of the worlds finest guitars?

I have never been able to figure out why so many American sellers are leery of shipping to Canada or Europe.

From what I understand, the process isn't any more complicated, expensive or a pain than when we ship to the USA or Europe?

All we have to do is go to a Canada Post outlet, fill in a customs declaration and pay.

I once ordered some parts from Florida and when I joked that it would probably be easier to have reactor parts shipped to Iran, he (the seller...) got really paranoid and said, "we don't even joke about that..." (hinting you never know who is listening). It can't be that bad, is it?

Anybody have any thoughts on this...

Well the UPS rubber stamp is a big ripoff.

I bought a compressor for my studio from a fellow in Quebec. The unit was originally made in the US so no duty issues.

UPS charged me $28 to process the paperwork which as far as I could tell simply said it was a compressor for a studio.

Did you need the compressor to inflate your air guitar?

By some odd quirk, shipping Mr. Big T-shirts to members in Canada was a few pennies cheaper than shipping to members in the USA. Part of the 11 Trillion deficit, I guess.

Lots of US companies/sellers ship to Canada.

Maybe they just tell you that they don't because they find you irritating and want you to go away..lol

I am not an expert in this which is the 1st reason I am more comfortable within CONUS (plus Hawaii and Alaska). Other countries, I have had buyers want me to declare less than the value. This is illegal and can result in my loss if there is damage. There is a cost of brokerage and conversion of payment, even if wired to a separate account. If the buyer doesn't pay the customs, they will come back on the shipper.

Unfortunately, if I have two possible buyers, I would prefer shipping it to a U.S. address and payment in USD.

"Wonder why the seller would not ship internationally? "

Guitars going international are just inconvenient if you don't do it all the time. Combined with (as I found out) all post offices NOT interpreting the rules the same way. Then you get into the customs thing. I've had shipments go out and have everything from them take over 30 days to arrive just fine at their destination, to upwards of 45 days, when they've completely fallen off the map, to end up on my doorstep again. Recently got a package back from Italy nearly 60 days out cause, from the best I can translate, that the recipient didn't want to pay the customs.... so the product was just returned.

I have shipped a lot, so this all is just noise level for me, but for the person that ships only a few packages, I can see why they wouldn't bother with international.

We ship a lot of international (not guitars) and rarely have problems. But when there IS a problem, it's a real PITA.

My only point was that when it comes to USA built guitars there is far less selection in Europe than the US and some pretty rabid fans and collectors over there. I know for a fact that this sunbust 1537 in question that sold to a US buyer for under $500. would have gone for over $1200. to a European buyer. The seller missed out on some tidy profit for a little extra work on his part. Just saying ...
