Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | What is the purpose of your "investing"? Income? Long-term appreciation and growth? Tax deferment? Not sure about the laws down under, but it really depends upon your objectives. If you just want some interesting guitars to admire and possibly play on occasion, then your "investment" is primarily in your own perception of enjoyment, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you're looking to actually make money on buying and selling guitars, then you may end up with models that you don't really like. Personally speaking, I would invest elsewhere for income or appreciation, but still pull some out and use it on guitars and equipment because, quite honestly, it makes me feel good. You may not make anything on the guitars (nor on other investments for that matter), but neither will you lose a whole lot if you shop around and remain patient. On the plus side, you may very well find a lot of pure enjoyment playing and admiring your collection. For me, it has never been about what others believe might be valuable and collectible, but rather, what do I like? What do I want to look at when I'm in the bandroom? What do I personally find interesting? What makes me feel good? So, the quesation is, what would make you feel good? Rare one offs? Beauty in the finish and craftsmanship? Technological firsts? Bling? Variation? Project resurrections? In this respect, value is self-perceived and very personal. Furthermore, as the collection grows, its value to you may be based more on the collective value of its entirety rather than the sum of its individual contents. Just my $.02 since you asked. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Those two Ultra GSs that we were looking at on ebay sold for lots more than what I thought they were worth. Maybe you should buy some more of those.
Do me a favor and buy up the rest of Al's Koa Collectors so that I quit thinking about them. Other than that, I'd go for Cholloway's slothead if he still wants to sell it.
I'm afraid I'd just buy what I want, rather than buy something for resale. Buy what you want. If you can afford it, you deserve it. |

I'm not particularly interested in making money as such just have a varied collection that I can enjoy and appreciate.

You need a 1537, an 87, 97, 01 and 05 Collector's, an FD14, a nylon string (I prefer the 1713 over the 1624), a Josh White or Folklore (preferably a Josh White reissue), a Balladeer RI, a 30th Commemorative Custom Legend, a Ute (if you could find one) an 08 Adamas Collector and a Koa Collector.
Although I haven't played all of the above, I have played most and they provide about as much variety in one brand as I can imagine, without even starting on 12 strings or electrics. |

Location: Sydney, Australia | James, you should do what OMA does and spread out the purchasing fun, buy one a month until you've spent as much as you want to spend. Depending upon what you like to play you seem to have a lot of electrics and not so many acoustics. How about a nice 12 string Adamas? If you run out of room at your place, you can always store it at my house, its not that far if you need it back. You could also try and wangle a #47 Adamas from somewhere. Don't listen to Muzz, I like the Adamas I headstocks. |
