At a Fidelco Fund raising event October 2, 2010.
It's s/n # 53, 1187-7, in excellent condition. Letter of authenticity (unsigned of course, you know they are worth more that way!) and all that spoo. original case. Bidding to start probably around 10. The hoped for target is 43,000 which is what it takes to raise and train a guide dog, from birth to hand over to a blind person, so yeah it's way more that what it's worth, but on the other hand, it's worth it, particurlarly to the blind person.
I hate to part with such a piece of history but it is such a fitting thing to do in Robbie's memory and on the 50th anniversary of Fidelcoguidedogs.org. Maybe I got the title off a bit but you'll find it if you want to.
It will be a live auction at the 50th Gala party that evening. Those interested in bidding, please contact me and we'll work out the details as we get closer. Maybe a group of you want to join up and get it and share the guitar. It's a good one, ask Cliff he played it last, or some of the Usual Suspects at Amelia last year who also played it.
Anyway, there you go. Comments welcome, either here or pm.

Holy shit. Great guitar, even greater cause. Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Wouldn't anything above current market value (say $12-15K) be considered a donation to Fidelco for tax purposes? Sorta like when you make a pledge to Public Television and they send you a DVD or some such, your donation for tax purposes is the amount given less the value of the "gift"?

Beal,

Is that the one that Bobbo and I had in our room for the whole week we were at AI?

That was ONE SWEET SLOTHEAD! (but then aren't they all).......

That's a real nice gesture, Beal. Let's hope it brings over fifty and helps change a life for someone.

I think it was #53 that we had, T28. I have some video of the two Wongs doing a few numbers with it. It was a very sweet guitar and wish I could make it mine.

Great cause! Best of luck Beal! I can't swim in waters anywhere near this deep, but I'll be wanting to follow this auction with some serious interest.

Very generous Beal. I'm sure giving away that guitar would hurt more than giving away the money. Hmmm, 5M jackpot in Powerball tonight.

Beal I know how important this is to a person. My cousin Bob is blind and he finally has his guide dog Jack. I wish I had money to help with. I just blew what I had, and being disabled myself, I know that this is a wonderful cause. I salute you for doing this

Here's the description that's going into the catalogue for the auction. Also with it will be an updated list of all the slots and where they are today if known.

This Ovation Adamas guitar, serial number 53, was built in 1977. There were a total of 34 of these special hand built guitars made, starting with serial number 26 (guitars 1-15 were developmental units and never sold) and ending with serial number 60. Of these only 7 were built as straight acoustic instruments, all the others had pickups and electronics. This guitar was returned to the factory for some unknown reason, or possibly was never shipped to the store Modern Music who had ordered it. On one of his numerous visits to the factory, Charlie had a chance to play this guitar and found the sound exceptional. This was after the initial production had been halted so the guitar could be redesigned to make it more affordable to manufacture. Since it was in effect, an obsolete model, it wound up in his car when he drove home that night. It has been used on many of the recordings that CHK made over the years. The straight acoustic guitar was very clear and clean when recorded.
Production of the Adamas guitar began again with serial number 77 (60 to 77 were prototypes developing the new design and never sold) and continues today with over 23,000 guitars made and sold.
These first 34 guitars have become known as the Slotheads because of the style of the peghead design. The redesigned guitars #77 and onwards did not have this feature. These original guitars sold for around $2200. In today’s market they are highly sought after by collectors and Ovation aficionados and several have changed hands in excess of $10,000.

Last couple went for $12,500 so you might as well update that and make those bidders jump a bit higher.
