As I review some of the discussion threads here, I'm struck by the phenomenal depth and detail of information readily available from, and regularly provided by, so many members. On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that I'm actually part of such a fanatic group of Ovation geeks.

I'm comforted in the knowledge that a good number of guys here have forgotten more about Ovations than I'll ever know.
I'm a minor Ovation dork.... at best... on a good day.

I've just been hanging out here for 5 years, hoping I might learn something. I'll give it 5 more and then I'm out of here.

I wouldn't be so quick to refer to one's self as a "dork" until you have read the definition. Last time I checked it was the name for a male whale's reproductive appendage.

Urban myth. That said, I've heard they make the best nuts and saddles and are highly sought after by the true guitar aficionado.

That said:

Dork
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dork may refer to:

* USA pejorative slang for a quirky, silly and/or stupid, socially inept person, or one who is out of touch with contemporary trends. Often confused with nerd and geek, but does not imply the same level of intelligence.
* Vulgar slang for "penis"

I am a dork.

I like to use the term "Ovation Nerd" with a slight lean toward having thoughtfully selected the less advertised Ovation niche market to focus my OCD powers for the good of mankind.

Sure its a rationalization but it's MY RATIONALIZATION!

I will graciously accept the title of Ovation Dork only when I can accurately and on demand decipher and describe the attributes of each model based on their four digit code.

Until then I consider myself:

An Ovation Fan
A Matrix Nut
An Academy Defender
An Applause Freak (to a disturbing degree)

My wife and step daughter are very tuned in to the latest trends in fashion, culture, societal norms, etc. I, on the other hand, remain perpetually clueless. We were all visiting over the weekend and they asked what my latest guitar was. So I spend about 15 minutes in the basement pulling out the carbon case to haul up the OFC-II, then I spend another 15 minutes describing all of its high-tech attributes with as much detail as I can recall. When finished, they just shake their heads not so much to show disgust, but rather pitifulness, and one says to the other sort of matter-of-factly, "What a dork."

We dorks deserve more respect.

I've had several similar experiences. If we have people over, after I respectfully engage in conversations about our kids, TV, sports or whatever, someone might ask to see my guitars. One or two of the guys in our usual group may be interested and might ask questions. Others, including SWMBO, comment that I have so many of the same guitars. After about 2 minutes of me explaining how none of the 15 Ovations are the same, they walk off or start talking to someone else about something else.

Certifiable WEIRD-O. Jeff and I have been outright "dissed" for sticking to our Os: From a coulpa snobs here in town who have seriously snubbed us, to the GP contest where playing an Ovation was equivalent to being a sad-ass imitation, dimeola wannabe etc etc.

Proud of it!

"Why do you have so many of the same guitar?" I have gotten this from a family member or two. Are you kidding me? This one has a cutaway, this one is a twelve string, this one is a nylon string, this one is red, this one is blue. They shake their heads and say - they look like the same guitar for me.

Sigh...

Getting a 12 string should have been easy enough to explain, but I still get "why do you need more than one guitar, when you can only play one at a time?" Those people usually don't want an answer and would ask the same question about golf clubs.
I was in a music store and a mother was telling her son he didn't need a 6 string, he should just play half of the strings on his 12 string.
