Arthur, did you mean citizens "of" the street?
Portland has some interesting areas. What street are you playing on?

No... I mean normal taxpaying, working, citizens of Portland...
Not the 37 year-old Adults who still refer to themselves as "Street Kids".

I play in front of the "Congress Center" across 5th Ave from the Multnomah Court building.
Also in front of the Nordstrom Rack on Morrison.
I need to find some new spots.

But this is Mike's Guitar Thread!

As a dedicated 12 string-guy, I gotta say... that is the most #&%in' sexy guitar I have seen in a long, long while.

When you added the pic of the headstock (WOW!!)... I had to go lie down in the snow for a bit, lol.

Totally platinum with envy here!!

Owned an acoustic 12 before I owned an acoustic 6...great vocal accompaniment...
As for music, mostly I like it all...
Since I can't sing right now, I am experimenting with different guitars through the ElevenRack and ProTools...when I can fit it in between work, kids, and Doctor appt's...

I used to think getting older was measured by the years one has lived: actually it's by the number of Doctor's one has.

Onward through the fog...

Congrats Mike! That is a real beauty! Looking at that one gives me gas! I like the pickup configuration. How does its it sound? What would you compare it to? Can I borrow it? ;)

Steve the pickup config is fairly simple: The pickups are special design PRS 12 string Treble and Bass Humbuckers and a Lindy Fralin center single coil and it basically uses the McCarty switching with a 3-way selector - plus coil-split push/pull tone pot for 6 excellent choices of pickup sounds (push/pull in the up position splits the treble PRS 12 string pickup to single coil and activates the center Lindy Fralin single coil pickup). Using the tone control further enhances the variety of sounds. I have been able to get everything from near acoustic 12 sounds from a clean amp (Roland or Twin Reverb) to flat out PRS sustaining/singing Rock tones (Deluxe or Marshall). Using the ElevenRack and Pro Tools allows infinite combination's of effects and amp's...big fun...I am hoping to have much more time in the near future to spend with the possibilities...
As far as comparison...it is on the one hand familiar and yet on the other very different: It is much more controlable than the Deacon 12 that I had (and loved) and much more versatile than the Gibson electric 12's I have owned (Doubleneck and Firebird 12) which I found to be sort of one dimensional...The quality of construction and QA is second to none and being a custom color and gold hardware custom order will certainly add to it's value over the years.
Steve, I will bring it to the next gathering (SSJ) and you are welcome to try it out...

Wow Mike that's cool. You could spend a lot of hours coaxing different tones out of that one. That should be fun!

Now all we need is a gathering so we can all play and check out all the cool guitars!

Don't know much about PRS models. They have a huge booth at NAMM and must sell a lot of product. There's a bunch available on eBay and the asking price range is enormous. Their upper end models (USA custom shop limited editions?) look to be in direct competition with USA Hamer, although the price of a Hamer might be a bargain compared to many of these models. Any PRS experts here?

Gavin, the guy that bought my 99 Collector had an early PRS. I don't know if they were always called PRS. Anyway, when he was a student at Berklee, Paul Reed Smith came to the school, in part to convince students that they should use PRS guitars from his new company. So Gavin bought one and then never played it after PRS took off.
He was trying to sell it for $3000, but I don't know if he ever did. I could contact him and see, if anyone is interested, or you could look him up under Gavin in the OFC directory and see if you could contact him yourself.

3 Grand is a huge bargain: the originals are going for 10 to 30 large depending on the model and finish...

From Wikipedia:
"PRS Guitars is an American guitar manufacturer headquartered in Stevensville, Maryland. PRS Guitars was founded by guitarist and luthier Paul Reed Smith in 1985. PRS guitars, originally crafted for local guitar players, have become highly prized by musicians and collectors around the world. Pickups are designed and wound in-house; PRS is more secretive about magnet and wire type and construction than some aftermarket pickup manufacturers. PRS humbucking pickups have gone by many names, including HFS (Hot, Fat, and Screams); Vintage Bass; McCarty; Santana I, II, and III; Archtop; Dragon I and II; Artist I through IV; #6, #7, #8, #9, and #10, RP (after the initials of the designer, Ralph Perucci) and Soapbar. Further adding to the obscurity, many of the above pickup types are actually a pair of pickups wound in opposing directions, one intended for the neck and one for the bridge position."

My friend, who actually ordered my 12 string in late '09, is one of the largest vintage PRS dealers in the country; he features very rare and hard to find original models as well as a full line of their current inventory including the exotic wood Private Stock models (in the 10 grand range).
Artists who were primary in using PRS guitars:
* Mikael Akerfeldt of the Swedish Progressive Death Metal band Opeth.
* Ted Nugent was the first big-name guitar player whom Paul Reed Smith persuaded to play one of his guitars.
* Carlos Santana was another recipient of some of Paul Reed Smith's early instruments. Santana's unusual 24-fret, 24½"-scale signature model was one of PRS' earliest special models.
* Alex Lifeson of Rush has used PRS guitars since 1990, and continues to use them today, in addition to other brands, primarily Gibson, which he is using over PRS currently.
* Al Di Meola, from Return to Forever, mainly uses a Private Stock McCarty PRS as a solo artist.
* Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge has two signature PRS models.
* Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction has his own PRS signature, but is also use an LA Custom Shop Ibanez RG
* Larry LaLonde of Primus
* Orianthi who uses the PRS Custom 24 model

Now, something just for you Beal:

In 2000 PRS released their "Singlecut" guitar, which bore some resemblance to the venerable Les Paul, Gibson Guitar Corp filed a trademark infringement against Paul Reed Smith. An injunction was ordered[2] and PRS stopped manufacture of the Singlecut at the end of 2004. Federal District Court Judge William J. Haynes, in a 57-page decision ruled "that PRS [Paul Reed Smith] was imitating the Les Paul" and gave the parties ninety days "to complete any discovery on damages or disgorgement of PRS's profits on the sales of its offending Singlecut guitar."[2]
In 2005, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit reversed the lower court decision and ordered the dismissal of Gibson's suit against PRS.[3] The decision also immediately vacated the injunction prohibiting the sale and production of PRS’s Singlecut Guitar. Paul Reed Smith Guitars announced that it would immediately resume production of its Singlecut guitars.
Paul Smith, the founder of PRS, stated "We are delighted that the appellate court affirmed what we and the industry have long known: the PRS Singlecuts are musical instruments of the highest quality that would never be confused with a competitor’s product."
Gibson tried and failed to have the case reheard by all twenty-four Sixth Circuit judges (denied in December 2005)[4] and then by the United States Supreme Court (denied June 2006),[5] which was their last chance to have their original injunction upheld.
In the litigation, Gibson alleged that concert goers in a smoky concert hall might not be able to differentiate a PRS Singlecut from a Gibson Les Paul. The appellate court rejected that trademark theory out-of-hand, emphasizing Gibson’s concession in court arguments that “only an idiot” would confuse the two products at the point of sale.

I have one other PRS: a Custom 22 in Whale Blue from 2001: 2001 PRS Custom 22 10 top Whale Blue

BTW: the new Santana album, "Guitar Heaven" is fantastic IMHO...

When you have a couple hours, read Ed Roman's rants on PRS and other guitars. He even bashes some guitars that he sells.
Gavin told me he sold his PRS. I didn't ask for and didn't get details and my memory, coupled with my lack of knowledge, could be faulty. He does still have the 99 Collector, though.
