| Jeff Buckley\'s cover . A case where the cover is better than the original; can't be improved on.
Along those same lines of a cover being better than the original, Obadiah Parker\'s cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya".
And it goes without saying that ANYBODY would do this better than the original, but Travis does a great "Hit Me Baby One More Time". |

They had Wainwright record it because he was under contract with the right record company.

Location: NJ | For the actual movie soundtrack (the one heard while watching the movie), "Hallelujah" is performed by John Cale. When later released on CD, the soundtrack album includes a performance by Rufus Wainwright. It was a song originally written and sung by Leonard Cohen, but it has been covered many, many times by various other artists such as Allison Crowe, Kate Vogele, and Jeff Buckley.

And I know what you mean about it being over-played in the past couple years. It caught my ear years ago when I heard it used on The West Wing TV show. But since American Idol got hold of it....
I had some reservations about playing it myself but we've been playing it in practice just because we like it so we thought what the hell. One more time won't create a black hole or anything.
One thing we do is shorten it to 4 verses. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | One of the local musicians, Marty Meyer, a GREAT pianist with a fantastic voice, does a version of this with his nine year old daughter, Isabella. That is my very favorite version. I'll see if they have it recorded somewhere and post it here. |

Location: CA | With all due respect to those other artists, this performance on last year's American Idol (I'll never forgive my wife for getting me hooked...) is the one that brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. This guy (Lee Dewyze) has a great voice that is perfect for this song.

I agree this song has been WAY OVERDONE recently, and in most instances not very well in my opinion. One of the first to jump on the post Buckley Hallelujah bandwagon was Brandi Carlile. I saw her perform it about 10 feet from my face at a local club on Capital Hill here in Seattle. Her version is a copy of Buckley's (I believe she though it was his song at first).
