Location: Montana | Anyone found a way to deodorize a cat pee smelling guitar case? I've tried soap and water and the enzyme products that work on skunk but no luck. It works for a while but the smell comes back. If I can't get rid of the smell I'm about ready to rip out and replace the lining. |

Seriously, check yourlocal aut oarts store. The sell an orange citrus spray that car dealers use to de louse stinky cars. All natural, and wonlt harm the fabric in the case.

The Auto Parts store is a good recommendation.
Ripping-out the fabric probably wouldn't do it, cuz the it is probably into the Styrofoam by now.
(that is if we are talking about an Ovation molded case) |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Call a pet store and ask if they have something specifically designed to eliminate cat urine and its odor. If I remember correctly, (I am middle-aged after all), cat urine is very different from other animal...uhhh,,,byproducts like dog urine and skunk scent. There is probably a specific product marketed to get it out of carpets that will probably work on your case as well.
On the other hand, if you decide to just pitch it for a new case, shoot me a PM. ;)

I haven't specifically used it to remove cat-urine odor, but it works miraculously well on a lot of different odors.
I used Ozium on an old Ovation case (and guitar) that smelled like someone had stored still-burning cheap cigars inside, and it got 99% of the reek out… it took a couple of treatments (spray, close case, wait overnight) but it did the job. YMMV.
(BTW, you may find it at Walgreens, I did.) |

Location: Connersville, Indiana | Carpet cleaning companies have products you can use. The are expensive. Dryer sheets should work well, as said above. When I was a policeman and picked up a person that smelled real bad or they threw up in the back. After cleaning I just sprayed Polo Green Cologne. Works Great. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | If it got into the foam, you need to remove the foam. I have had cats most of my adult life, and I used to (well I still do) clean carpets professionally.
Cat urine essentially does not smell when it's dry so there is this false sense of "I cleaned it" when in reality you just dried it. When it dries it crystallizes. Add moisture and the smell is back. Petzyme is one of the better products to break it down, but then you must extract it completely else you'll be right back where you started.
I would recommend spraying on the Petzyme, let it soak in for a few moments, and use a wet/dry vac to extract it out. Do this several times.
Now one final step, when your done extracting, it's obviously going to still be damp. As Miguel suggested, leave the case open in the sun. This doesn't really do anything for the cat pee, but it will insure no related bacteria grow.
The above is assuming that it was just sprayed and didn't soak in. If it soaked in, you will have remove the foam. Remember, it's foam. If it got wet, and soaked 2 inches into the foam, NOTHING you spray on the surface is going to do anything, and no amount of soaking is ever going to be able to extract out the residue. If it's just on the surface, the above method should clean it up just fine.
Leaving a "musty" smelling case in the sun will make it fresh again. The UV rays kill the mold bacteria that is causing the "old case" smell. |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | Heinz White Vinegar from the supermarket. Dilute the vinegar in some water and wipe down the case and let it dry. I used this to eliminate the smell of vomit from the rugs. At one time all of my three boys caught a virus and they were taking turns vomiting for about 48 hours. They even got a part of the rug (living room) that was just cleaned with this solution. This happened about 6 years ago and the only signs in the area of the rug is the normal wear pattern from use.
Let the case dry and retreat if necessary. The vinegar smell will also go way.
Just about 6 months ago I won an item from ebay that came from a heavy smokers home. It really reaked of smoke. I treated this item twice over the course of 4 days. Today you cannot even tell that it originally smelled as bad as it did. |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | I am not a smoker and I am very sensitive to the smell of smoke. The item I won from ebay is a film magazine for my Hasselblad medium format camera. Yes even today I will still shoot film every so often. I use the magazine and cannot tell that it smelled that bad. The magazine has a leatherette cover so I was careful applying the vinegar solution.
I forgot how I found out about this method but it has worked sucessfully every time. |

Location: Montana | Thanks for all of the advice. I suspect that it has gotten into the foam. The enzyme and sunlight seems to kill it but then after the case is closed for a while it comes back. If I can't kill it I'm going to try to cover it up - so I'm going to give the Febreeze and dryer sheet approach a whirl. If that doesn't work I might have to start smoking cigars when I play. |

I had a situation where my son decided to have a barbeque in the park with friends before heading over to the sandbox. The cops ran them off before they could even get started, and they ended up doing something else. But said son put the four racks of raw pork ribs into the trunk of his car. Which he parked in my driveway and headed out. I finally found the problem FOUR weeks later (middle of the summer). Words cannot describe the scene.
