Location: Newington, CT | I liked it. The guy sings in Russian. His voice sounds unpolished to me, but nice. The song is called "When the asphalt ends." Most interesting is the sound he gets from the 12-string Ovation he's playing. I can't tell whether it's electronics producing it or what. It's a silvery kind of almost fragile tone. More high end than low, and not all that bad. Maybe one of you more informed mavens can tell what's causing it.
Anyway, the song is right next door to something I could like a lot, but because it's right next-door and not there (in fact it's even vaguely reminiscent of the trololo guy!), I can listen to it only for a minute or two before I have to move on.

Must be a big guy the way his thumb can come around the neck and still finger the chords.
Using all fingers and thumb, good sound
Ever notice how a foreign language can make the sound better if you don't know the words? The voice just becomes another instrument.
I give this guy a A-.
BUT
he really needs Dark Bar to pick his shirts out for him, that one doesn't make it. |

AJ "Strung differently" makes sense to me...the sound didn't seem to accord with what his fingers were doing. Thanks, AJ...I didn't think of that. |

Location: Newington, CT | He's part of the Novitsky Brothers. They have a bunch of videos on YouTube. I haven't seen them together, but so far I've seen this guy (Dmitri, or Dima) and Grima. In finding these two, I also found Alexander Rosenbaum , a folk singer/songwriter/guitarist who seems to have quite a colorful history in Russia.
Interestingly, many of them play Ovations in many (maybe all -- haven't seen them all yet) of their videos (except this guy here , who plays a really interesting guitar, and seems to be playing in his bathroom). I've noticed the Ovation thing with a lot with players from the slavic lands. Think also of Roman Miroshnichenko (Roman) who visits this board sometimes, and who jams regularly with people like Al DiMeola, Ivan Smirnov (what a name, eh?!? Right out of James Bond!) and Vadim Chebanov. Click here for a video of these three doing quite a nice McLaughlin-DiMeola-De Lucia-esque jam. And, Roman, in the middle, has his Ovation, which is, I think, an AD of some kind.
But back to this guy: Dima Novitsky. Singing-wise, he seems to have only a passing acquaintance with the notes, and that's what I found difficult to listen to. I figured that if I heard that, then surely others here heard it and found it grating.
As some of you are aware, I've been castigated, rather vociferously, in these very pages for being unable to hear my own near misses when playing an insufficiently-tuned guitar. Makes me wonder what it is that I can recognize in the voice, that I'm not hearing in my own playing. I wonder if it's some musical relative of the McGurk Effect . I confess to the weakness, but am not sure how to overcome it except through continued practice.
'Course it could be something as simple as a bunch of guitarists minding a vocal miss less than a guitar miss. Can't be ruled out.
Either way, it's interesting that -- at first glance at least -- it seems as though Ovations are getting really good exposure in Russia. That can't be all that bad a thing. Though, with the lambasting that Tim in Yucaipa took recently (some seem to be in a "no-well-intentioned-post-will-be-left-unmauled" frame of mind), that might well be contradicted. |

Used to be you were allowed to post your own opinion in a thread even if it wasn't the same as the original poster. It made for lively discussion and usually opened up the subject to several points of view which in the end was educational for everyone. These days it seems that if you have a contrary opinion (or even facts) that others are posting, you are expected not to participate. |

Such a climate WILL repel, and has repelled, others who actually have contrary points of view, and can express them without suggesting that another is a moron.
Sarcasm artfully delivered can be a potent means of self-expression. It's like tobasco or garlic...it should be used to flavor and provide contrast for less piquant fare. Some seem to serve up only garlic and tobasco, which may indicate a lack of versatility...or maturity. Or a liver complaint. |
