Location: Central Massachusetts | very peculiar how the wood grain isn't parallel to the neck.. the grain of the two halves of the soundboard meet at a 45 degree angle. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | Having done lots of reading on guitar building, this is called runout...the grain of the two pieces of wood NOT being parallel where they meet. Anyone know why this is an issue to look for and stay away from in a spruce top, but it's OK in these Redwood models? Is it just a visual preferance? John <>{ |

Location: Boise, Idaho | David, this one has been on before with no bids. Don't know why. It's a beautiful guitar. Maybe everyone is in the same boat as us. Several others on my short list have come up lately and then I found the 90 Collector's locally after you gave me the tip about craigslist. I bought that one last night, but it's going to Paul Blanchard. The checking account is pretty much empty.
As far as the grain, I think all the redwoods were like that. |

John <>{ Grain runout can be tricky to see unless you know what to look for. It's caused by the wood not being quarter-sawn accurately. One of the effects of grain runout is that each half of bookmatched top reflects the light differently. The result is that from certain angles one half of the top appears darker in colour to the other.
Grain run out is common in low grade spruce and crops up a lot on cheap guitars. Slight grain runout is really just a cosmetic issue but in extreme cases it can cause structural problems. This isn't runout on the 2001 collectors, it's figure in the wood and crops up a lot in redwood. It's no more a problem than flame figure in maple. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | I believe that the effect here is termed "Chevron". The tops are intentionally put together that way. Creates a nice look. You'll note that several Hamers use this as well. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | The one on ebay finally sold for 1 bid of $750. I have to blame dvd for my lack of funds at the moment. He turned me onto the 1624, but I can't blame anyone for the 1614. Someday the redwood collector's may join them. |

Patsbro Hi Patsbro, I'm glad to hear that it ended up in good hands! I was surprised not to see more bids as well.. Really seems to be a buyers market at the moment until more tax returns roll in, I suspect.
Thanks to Woz, I will also be the recipient of an '01 Collectors' here in the next few days! I managed to sell my Balladeer LX on eBay so that helped with convincing my wife to spend some of the tax return on the redwood. Well, that and agreeing not to buy another guitar for at least a year. :eek: Gives me lots of time to decide which nylon-stringed model to shoot for, I guess!
Now I gotta go wait (a week) for that UPS truck.. thanks for the tracking number, Woz! Anybody integrated tracking numbers into Google Maps yet?? :) |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I wish my wife blamed you instead of me. Congrats on the Redwood. Too bad about the 1 year moratorium. I've only been stuck with a few months at a time.
The 1624 is still in Portland if you want to try it out. It will only be there for 3 more weeks, so you may have GAS for a long time if you like it. Thanks again for looking out for me. |
