I've got a question. Would it be out of line to have a silent auction here on the board? Here's the deal. I HATE Ebay and DO NOT want to list my guitar(s) for sell on it. I would rather sell them to one of the folks on the OFC. I was thinking about setting a minimun bid and have folks send me their bids via email or PM's and after a week or so sell it to the highest bidder. What are your thoughts?

I am also ok with that. Can't imagine any rules that might be broken (but that would assume that I read the rules to begin with).

auctions run by different rules.
set a price advertise it for sale.
I don't think we should be running auctions on the site.

Good idea. That's what the OFC community is all about. Use the SELL/TRADE board or start an 'AUCTIONS' board. It's all about the same anyway, right?

If you just characterize it as "Best offer" and set a time limit of a say two weeks with a threat that'll go on ebay if there're no "reasonable" offers, shouldn't be a problem. I've seen it here before. Seemed OK to me. An auction is a different thing.

I'd say, use the "Buy/Sell" section, post the guitar and a price, and a time frame before it goes on ebay.

I don't want this board to just become a marketplace.

"Auctions run by a different set of rules"? How would it be different then what we do now? I mean:

I have a guitar I would like to sell for a minimum of $XXX dollars. Anyone who would like to consider this guitar please send me a PM or an email with the amount you would be willing to pay for said guitar.

How is this ANY different then what we do day to day? I'm not trying to "make waves" here, just courious.

My opinion, if you want to auction off your guitar do it on ebay. You'll get far better visibility and probably a higher price.

If on the other hand you want to "keep it in the family" or cut a good deal for your brothers and sisters here on the board, then just list it for sale at a fixed price. You know what you want for it weather selling here or on ebay.

Interestingly, I've listed several guitars for sale here and got no interest from the members, but then I put them on ebay and OFC members bid and in several cases paid MORE than I was originally offering it for here. I don't understand this.

BTW, there is a BEAUTIFUL Bushman Jenny tenor ukulele in the forsale section right now. Don't let the "Fish Dicks" video scare you off.

Why don't you just list it for sale here higher than your "reserve" would be and add "or best offer".

We buy or sell here generally because we know this is a trusted group who love Ovations and take care of them. I think auctions tend to open up issues and potential conflicts, like we see on ebay all the time. We probably don't want a bunch of first time posters showing up just to auction stuff here.

Just my 2 cents.

Designzilla-I hadn't thought of others coming on board just to sell something. That would not be good. In fact that is enough for me not to follow up on this any further. I'll just post it as "For Sale" and see what shakes out. Thanks everyone for your input.

Just hang onto that Ute until I buy it. Need to build up the bank account after buying the 87 Collector's that was tied to the Honda Pilot.

Auctions are not a simple buy and sell. They involve numerous parties which can include collusion and other irregularities.
I am not real sure how to go about something like this. I know if I wanted to have an OFC bingo game that would be considered gambling and illegal unless our server was offshore or in a crab boat in the bering.

I am rather sure that with auctions you must insure the person bidding is of age etc and there is no real set up to verify that info.

I understand and respect what you say about e bay, I have a personal love hate relationship with it.

List the item on the sell/trade, ask for offers, take the one you like.

Tuppy,

Some guys in dark suits, shades, and badges just left. They wanted to know when you were going to be back from the old country.

I tried stalling them, but they seemed pretty determined!

In keeping with my divine calling here, I thought I'd jump in. :)

As far as verifying everyone being adults, etc - hell... eBay doesn't even make an attempt to do that for buyers.

I tinker a little with balloon twisting, and there is a popular forum for twisters that does run an auction thread from time to time - and sometimes it gets to be a whole lotta fun.

Here's an example of an auction thread done through a forum thread like this (it's worth reading - it gets funny):

http://www.mbd2.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2020&KW=auction

Personally, I think this sort of thing could drive more traffic to this board - and that wouldn't be a bad thing, right?
