Using a combination of its original features along with some new technology, this guitar shines as both a great acoustic and acoustic/electric guitar, Limited in production to 300 pieces, the new Custom Legend retains original features such as a deep bowl, non-cutaway body – Ovation’s fullest sounding body style – plus original abalone rosette, hand-inlaid abalone purfling around the body,classic A brace pattern and carved bridge.

Guys and Gals...IMHO, this is the finest wood-top that Ovation has made. Yes, FD-14, 1537, and others but this has the OP-Pro w/XLR, exquisite carving, abalone, and bearclaw spruce. Again, IMHO, only the 1987 Collectors' that Bruce has loaned me (one of the few w/bearclaw, formerly Sam's) can match it.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Can I ask a dumb question - what exactly is bearclaw spruce and why is it better than regular spruce? To be honest, to me the bearclaw topped guitars that I have seen look "defective" like it's a bad piece of wood or something. What am I missing?

Location: SoCal | I've never been a huge fan of the bearclaw spruce tops, but to some, the looks are killer. When I play, I can't see the top of the guitar, so what's the point. Kinda like the new spinner wheels that some put on their cars to make them look cool. I prefer to put in good seats. I don't care what others think when they look at me, I want my butt to be happy. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Although I don't care for bear claw tops either, I really like the playability and sound of the Custom Legend. I really miss playing the one I gave away, but the 12-string deep bowl I have makes up for it. To be totally honest and unbiased, I can say that after trying LOTS of different 12 strings, no other 12 string plays better than an Ovation. No other! |

This one is awfully close to home. JeffreyD is probably in Kirkland right now and tdeej will probably be going through there next week on the way to the NW Gathering. |

I'll probably adopt it if no one else does but the orphanage is getting full - the 1658 CL 12-string slothead last week, the Al DiMeola this week. I will be sending one 30th Anniv CL back to my daughter in NYC.
Anyone who may have seen Bruce's 1987C w/the honey colored bearclaw would be in awe. After 19 years, gorgeous. |

Dave You can occassionally find inexpensive guitars from the 20' to the 40's with bearclaw tops because some manufacturers back then considered it a cosmetic flaw and the wood was downgraded for use on cheaper models. We know better these days.
I posted this in response to a similar question a few years ago
Bearclaw figure, also known as "hazelficte" is a pattern in the grain which occurs sometimes in spruce. It's a rippling of the longitudinal fibres of the wood and is called Bearclaw because it can look like clawmarks. Unlike the figure in "tiger-stripe" or curly maple, the effect is random and assymetrical. Bearclaw Spruce carries a premium price because it's found in older trees with tight grain structures which will produce very stiff, yet lightweight tops. Stiff lightweight spruce usually means killer tone. |

Great looking guitar and would be wonderful for my Legend that is sorely missing from my collection. But SWMBO just now mentioned having to send in next semester's tuition check. Hanging around Porsches for a week also got me thinking about saving some money for a really big purchase. |

A little better timing on my part (got to many money required projects goin on at the present) and this one absolutely would have been in the studio with it's brother.
Tony, if you ultimately adopt this one, we could probably work something out in about 6 months! :D |

Location: SoCal | Mark, plenty to play...might even be able to christen a new music room (desired move to larger house). Most at 58 are down-scaling...too many toys (guitars, cars, etc.) Will need to get a larger house.
Stephen, only problem I have is how many 47RI's and the need to get a BMW Conv from NYC to San Diego. Course, could save some shipping if I had Al load up the back seat with a couple of guitars. ;) |
