Location: SoCal | Forget the pre-amp (if there is one), forget the quality of the spruce, the bracing, finish cracks, the condition, price you paid, WHAT IS THAT OVATION WOOD-TOP THAT YOU "FEEL" THE MOJO, that CALLS out to you to play it...that defines how you are going to play (folk, jazz, etc.; pick, strum, fingerpick).
Forget if it is the best in the world...who cares what about the opinions of others. Heck, might be one with history where you had a project guitar that you brought back.
For me, the 1969 1127-4 Glen Campbell Artist (acoustic), Grover tuners, AAA spruce, A brace, F161. So sweet. Paid $500. It is like an old friend. Never found that with the other "supermarket brands".
For me, it is the 47RI (or original) of the wood tops. |

For Standard Tuning my 96 Collector's. The one guitar I played the most of all, feels always right, even in the first minute of playing. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | I own 3 Ovations, and each one has an entirely different sound. My mood sort of dictates which one I pick up. But the one that transports me somewhere else every time is my '79 Pacemaker.
Got it on ebay last year for $300 and found it had several repairs to LARGE past issues, but the sound is magical...so much so that I'm taking it with us to Maine on vacation next week: a very large travel guitar in a Scion XA. I can't help myself!

Of the ones I own, the 1777LX. Even with it's top and bridge issues (or because of them) it feels and sounds like if the top were any more responsive, it would fly apart in pieces.
Of the ones I don't own but have played... the real 2006 Collectors - 12 fret, single hole, slothead Koa.

Location: Tampa, FL | For best aesthetic acoustic tone I'd have to go with my FUD. BUt I also have this amazing Legend with a bifurcated top that has the most incredible bass. Must be the sunburst finish on the latter. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Too many choices, although not as many as Tony has. Each calls with a different voice, depending upon what song I want to play. But the 1537 usually fits the bill for the mood and the song. Mellow and easy. |

Location: SoCal | There was a time when I would have said the 1537... and I still love that guitar and will never sell it. But it would be between 2 steel strings... my 87 Collectors and my FD14. One is perfect for performing and one perfect for the front porch. I'd hate to have to choose between the two. |

Doesntt matter exactly what it us, Legend, Custom Legend, LX, etc. Not the best guitar in the world, but far from the worst. If it says Legend someplace on it, it'll get the job done. Dave |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Moody might have changed my mind. I like the bling of the 87, but I like the mellower sound of the 1537. When I had to decide which guitar I was going to play at my Mother's 80th birthday party, I chose the 87. I thought about that choice for hours.
I don't have an FD14 and only played one for a short time. It was about a week after I got my 1614 and was still very enamored with it. The FD sounds softer than the 1614, but I didn't like it better. The 1614 is right up there among the top 3 of guitars that I like to play whenever I get the chance. It is also traditional in appearance, has a beautiful top and a slothead. All those make it one of my best players. |
