I believe this was the debut of the ssb. I heard a great review from someone who played one at the OFC NE gathering.

'83 was the first SSB in the collectors series. I think '84 claim to fame was first SSB with elite soundholes, except for some protos. Dave

I had one and gave it to my son. It was the first year for the shallow bowl. It really was a very nice sounding guitar. Mine had a absolutely perfect neck.

After getting strong recommendations from a couple of respected individuals...picked up one 3/06. Great guitar, even good acoustic (especially for a shallow bowl-SS C/A) - must be the AAA spruce.

Anything under $600 is a great deal for good condition...heck, I ended paying $660 (with shipping) for mine and I'm happy.

That was Bill's. That particular guitar kinda destroys the theory that all SSB's sound like shit acoustically.

My first Ovation 1984-5 #1190 purchased 11/95, I still have the original receipt, I would like to know what has become of it and possibly be reunited with it. Awesome headturner, awesome sound. I always wanted a copy of the poster w/cwkII holding one. Someday I'll tell the story when I flew on a small commuter plane w/KISS. Carried her on, but I wasn't impressed, because Bill was my hero! In it's day, it was the coolest guitar ever!

I was also fortunate enough to own a Korean 4861 that also sounded great. I've owned 2 ssb's that put to shame a lot of full bodied guitars!

83 was the first SS, round hole barnboard.
84 was the first SS in elite configuration.
My 84 is a very good example but I also strongly feel that it's good because it had the hell played out of it for the first 10 years of it's life.

Makes sense. Of course by that logic, this 1869 I have must have been well-played for a long time, because it WAY out-projects (in both volume and tonal balance) my Adamas II SSB. I can't figure out any other reason why, and they're only a year apart in age, but the spruce must just be perfectly primed on that one.

Thanks Stonebobbo, When I get reunited with #1190 I will definitely have to get Bill to sign a copy of this poster. I keep my eyes open for both!

Cool Tony. It will be interesting to see where 1190 turns up, and the stories that accompany it's journey. And if the current owner whats to sell. Oh well, I guess I have something to do before I die! ;)

THAT guitar is a super shallow bowl with the tone of at least a mid depth bowl... it IS the cat's ass....
