I'm still hunting for a nylon sting, so I'll probably spectate on this one. Looks like its a good clean and buff away from being a very nice guitar.

But it doesn't look like there is any special script on the 12th fret and I'm not sure if it was there on any of the 87s. Looking at some of the pictures that are out there, it's difficult to tell if there is any script in that 12th fret. Let's ask Mark in Boise. Other than color, I'd say it looks like what it's advertised to be.

The 87c has a sweet, soft, mellow tone that can go dark or violent with a flick of the pick. The 1581 can sound like a bell with soul, then become a thunderstorm of bass. Poetic but true. I love them both, and play them pretty much equally.

There was a run of about 30-40 bearclaws at the end of the production. There also were just under 100 black ones made. Since it is such a cool guitar there have been variations made before and after, 12 strings, cutaways etc, all in small numbers. These shouldn't be considered part of the C-Series run, still very nice guitars but not part of the "C-Series". Only the 800 or so naturals, and the 30-40 bearclaws and the 80ish black ones should be considered part of the run.

Joined: September 2005 Posts: 98 Location: SF Bay area, California | Originally posted by Todd G.: My 1987-4 has the 12th fret year inlay. Handwritten '20' serial number on the label. Bridge is carved, but where there may have been a wide pickup with individual saddles, mine has the narrow blade bridge/pickup and there is a visible wood block inset for the size difference. The countouring of the block matches well enough to convince me that it is the original. ... It does have the hand-carved bridge and other decorations an 87 would have. But it doesn't look like there is any special script on the 12th fret and I'm not sure if it was there on any of the 87s.... I'll post some pics soon, I'd like to get other opinions. Joined: March 2005 Posts: 5567 Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Hello all and thanks for the info: yes it did go to a club member (me) and I feel it is well worth the price I paid! I just won it and it should be here by next week. I have been playing Ovations since 1976 and have owned 15 or so since then. I'll update my collection soon as well as give a report on this latest "Rare Bird" from ebay land. Keep on Pickin'! Blessings, Mike Sugar Grove, VA
