Location: SoCal | I disagree with John. The 2 knobber technology is 30 years old and to my ears, sounds like it. Almost everything from the OP24 forward sounds better.
But there's a unique opportunity if it still exists (and I would guess that it does). Ovation went back a year or two ago and redesigned and rebuilt the 2 knobber preamps for the Adamas I reissues. They're going to use it for the OFC guitars as well. This means updated circuits and technology and a much much better sound.
Buy the 2 knobber Adamas and send it directly to the factory to have the new electronics put in it. It would be worth the money. |

Location: SoCal | Acoustically, I agree with you John. But when it comes to the preamps, old is old. I realized this when I was playing next to somebody who had an LR Baggs undersaddle p/u in his guitar. It sounded so much better than my 1537...... |

Location: big island | i have seen the re-issue currently on eBay and the starting bid is $1K higher than this vintage one. i like the idea of upgrading the electronics, paul.
i am not content with the 597 acoustically, although i agree with stuart miller that it is well balanced over the spectrum. it sounds best when fingerpicked, however, it lacks volume.
this server seems to be getting worse. anyone else notice? |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Deep bowl textured top original (or reissue) Adamas 1's and 2's are the cats ass. Period. Yes there is a place for all the smooth topped stuff, but it ain't at the top of the ovation food chain - sorry.
2 knobbers sound good, but many show their age. Especially the jacks get very iffy. If it were me, I'd replace it with reissue 2-knobber because the holes are already there. To me the more modern electronics, such as Optima are way better. I just sold an Adamas I with OP-Pro. THAT was one of the nicest setups I've ever seen.

Location: SoCal | Lanaki, when it comes to preamps, get the newest you can. Dave's right about the old textured top Adamii being so good. So are the reissues. Putting new electronics in an old textured top Adamii is the best.
Just to give you an example, my GC 1627 RI has a redesigned stacked volume/tone control. It is absolutely the best plugged in guitar that I own, beating the snot out of my old 2 knobber 1537 and the several guitars that I own with the OP24.

OK, they're not Ovation-specific but they do a very similar job. There's a ton of other stuff that you can use without having to do it all onboard. An old single-knob FET3 guitar can sound amazing with the right processing. |
